Olivia de Havilland celebrated her 103rd birthday yesterday. Olivia first rose to stardom in the film "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" when she was only 18 years old. By 1938, Olivia, at 22, had become a huge star, thanks to movies like “Captain Blood” (1935) and “The Charge of the Light Brigade” (1936). However, the film that would change her career forever, and permanently set her on the Hollywood A-list was her role as Melanie Hamilton in “Gone With The Wind” which is the highest grossing film of all time when inflation is adjusted.

Ultimately, de Havilland's career spanned 53 years, from 1935 to 1988. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, Forbes magazine reported. Olivia had a very public, on-going feud with her younger sister, Joan Fontaine through her career and life. Joan and Olivia began feuding as young siblings and continued into adult life as they competed against each other in the film industry and as actresses for Academy Awards. However, Olivia told Vanity Fair the pair reconciled out of the public’s view before Joan’s death in 2013.

Turning 103 on July 1st, Olivia de Havilland has had a wonderful career and life. Olivia told Vanity Fair that she attributes her healthy long life to “the three L’s — love, laughter, and light.” She makes sure she keeps busy, she does a Times crossword puzzle every day. She also has no plans to write any personal memoirs soon as she’s planning on living to 110.

We love Olivia’s indomitable spirit! Happy Birthday!
