The Important Message Of Meghan Markle’s South Africa Tour Wardrobe

From dancing in the streets of Cape Town in an $85 dress designed by African designers for a sustainable brand, to her black Everlane jumpsuit worn for a meeting with South African entrepreneurs, Meghan Markle’s wardrobe has given Royal fans across the globe something to talk about.

According to the Daily Mail, Markle’s wardrobe cost the crown a modest £4,100 ($5,000), with the Duchess even recycling previously-worn outfits. In comparison, during the Duke and Duchess’ last royal tour, the 38-year-old’s wardrobe was estimated to have cost a whopping £118,000 ($145,000).

Markle included pieces designed by local, sustainable designers and was seen wearing flats on multiple occasions throughout the tour. The lack of official state dinners most likely contributed to the low cost of Meghan Markle’s outfits. A Royal Expert who spoke to the Daily Mail speculated that the Duchess of Sussex deliberately chose to sport a modest wardrobe for the African Tour, so as to have the media focus on the work the Sussexes did in Africa rather than superficial things like fashion.

Just a few days before touching ground in Cape Town, The Sussexes attended Misha Nonoo’s wedding in Rome where Markle sported a £8,900 Valentino dress. Upon landing, however, the Duchess was spotted in casual jeans, flats, and a simple denim jacket.

On her first Royal engagement in Cape Town, Markle opted to wear a £69 (about $85) wrap dress designed by a Malawian sustainable brand Mayamiko, which sold out just hours after she was pictured wearing it.

The Duchess of Sussex was generally quite modest with her choice of jewelerry throughout her stay in Africa.  Instead of wearing her engagement ring, which is estimated to have cost Prince Harry £140,000 ($172,000), the 38-year-old wore a £200 ($245) turqoise ring by Jennifer Meyer. Markle was also spotted wearing a £2 ($2.45) beaded bracelet given to her as a gift by local children and $32 earring by Madewell.

According to Vanity Fair, although Markle does not have a stylist she was accompanied by her private secretary Samantha Cohen, who has years of experience working closely with the Royal family.

The publication claims the Queen should be pleased by Markle’s choice of wardrobe for their trip.

“I expect the Queen will be pleased to see that Meghan has been taking a leaf out of her book, wearing outfits more than once and taking the advice of trusted aides like Sam,” A royal source told Vanity Fair.
