The Iconic White And Blue CorningWare Dishes Are Officially Back In Stores

Aug 15, 2018 by apost team

You may remember homemade casseroles and bread from your youth, made in the simple white dishes with a blue cornflower on them. You might be surprised to know that demand has spiked for them recently, with people paying hundreds of dollars for the vintage dishes on online auctions.

History of CorningWare

The dishes came out in 1958 after the material known as CorningWare had been used at NASA for a few decades. It was originally made in a laboratory on accident in 1952 by Dr. Donald Stookey. He was melting a piece of glass as an employee of Corning Glass Works but baked it above temperature on accident. When it developed a white film and didn't break, it was sent over to NASA and eventually turned into a line of dishes.

The pans are a simple throwback to a time when people cooked more and ate a bit healthier, and the nostalgia doesn't hurt for cooking inspiration. But they were bestsellers for many decades due to their easy nonstick surface and the solid form, which isn't too shallow or too deep.
