The Highwaymen Made History With 1990 "Me And Bobby McGee" Performance

The Highwaymen was a supergroup that was comprised of the biggest stars in country music: Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Waylon Jennings. They toured the country with their joint performances and one memorable song was "Me And Bobby McGee."

While "Me And Bobby McGee" is probably most well-known for its covers by Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead, it is actually a Kristofferson-penned song. He told Performing Songwriter that the song that tells a story of a couple of free spirits on the road was inspired by "La Strada," a Fellini movie.

The Highwaymen's 1990 performance at Nassau Coliseum was sung by all four of the men in beautiful harmonies with an upbeat country twang beat in the background. The song's writer Kris Kristofferson starts off the incredible performance followed by a solo by Waylon Jennings. The four singers put their own vocal stylings on the famous chorus that starts off "Freedom's just another name for nothing left to lose."
