Canadian singer and songwriter Leonard Cohen wrote one of the most recorded and popular songs on the planet. The song is called ‘Hallelujah’, and you’ve probably heard some version of it before. Cohen recorded the song back in 1984, but it didn’t catch on. However, seven years later, John Cale would record the same song, and it would capture the hearts of many.
John Cale saw the potential of the song and inspired other artists to make their versions of it. The most notable one is Jeff Buckley who added it to his 1994 Grace album. So far, the song has been performed by more than 300 professional musicians around the world. It was even sung in the Shrek movie.
The original song is quite long—it has more than 80 verses. Cohen wanted to capture most stories in the bible with this song. There is a verse that talks about Solomon. There’s also another one that explains the story of David. During his tours, Cohen would only sing one or two verses and then leave the last verse as it is.

In a 2012 episode of the X-Factor, one participant amazed the judges and the crowd with his rock-and-roll version of Hallelujah. Jeffery Gutt was auditioning because he was looking for a means to support his son. Although the judges were touched by this reason, they’d be more mesmerized by the performance.
Jeffery had an amazing voice that could be heard across the entire building. It was truly magical, and the audience applauded him for that. Simon Cowell, one of the judges, praised Jeffery and called his performance one of the best he’d ever heard.
Even though Jeff didn’t win the main prize that year, he returned in 2013 and almost came close. He came in second. In 2014, one media house claimed that he could be one of the most prominent reality TV performers.
