The Duchess Of Cambridge Isn't Allowed To Sign Autographs Due To A Very Important Rule

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is typically friendly, happy and wonderful when she meets her fans out and about in public — even at official engagements. She has been known to even pose and take pictures with a few lucky admirers. However, she has had to learn some boundaries over the years. For example, the duchess is not allowed to sign autographs for one very important reason, which we’ll explain in this article.

Being part of the royal family comes with a lot of greatness — not to mention fame — but also a lot of responsibilities. While most members of the family typically decline requests for pictures, specifically selfies, Middleton has seemed to embrace her loving fans and has allowed just a handful of them to pose with her. She has been held to a high standard during her time within the family and has made an effort to exceed those expectations.

The Duchess of Cambridge is known for being poised and classy at all times and that has tied into her daily responsibilities as a member of the royal family. She constantly showcases her beauty and grace with everything from her impeccable sense of style to her smart mannerisms and attitude. There are a handful of rules that all royals have to follow, including Middleton. While she has shown her appreciation for her fans over the years when she is out in public, she has made sure to follow the guideline of not signing autographs for them, as it poses too much of a risk.

The Royal Guidelines

Although some people may think that certain rules are meant to be broken, there is one specific action that royals are forbidden from doing. According to Hello Magazine, the entire royal family is forbidden from writing down their own signatures for members of the public. This is because it poses a risk of potentially being forged. While every member of the royal family is set to follow this one critical rule, it has been broken just one single time in the past. According to Hello Magazine, Prince Charles “signed an autograph for a victim of devastating floods, writing ‘Charles 2020’ on a piece of paper” back in 2010. This has been the only knowing occasion of the crucial rule being broken.

This requirement was something that everyone in the family had to get adjusted to, especially Meghan Markle. She was a former actress, so she was likely used to signing autographs for her many adoring fans; she has had to reel that back in order to follow royal guidelines. Luckily, she is still allowed to take photos — and even selfies — with her fans and show her gratitude for them in that way.

This isn’t the case with every member of the family. In fact, most of them don’t just decline requests for selfies, they find them odd. According to Hello Magazine, Prince Harry “hates selfies.” He has turned them down in the past, instead offering to take a normal photograph. Queen Elizabeth has also noted that she finds the whole matter “strange,” Hello Magazine reported.

The Forbidden Rule

According to Marie Claire, the number of rules that royals have to follow range from a wide list, including not being able to eat certain foods during royal events and instructing women how to walk down stairs accordingly. Although these restrictions are set in place, rules are sometimes broken. The cardinal rule of not signing autographs has been known for being one of the more serious delegations the royal family has been given.

While fans would be able to cherish such an incredible memento of their meeting with the royals, signing anything poses too much of a security risk. Marie Claire reported that Charles has declined autographs while in public. “Sorry, they don’t allow me to do that,” he explained. The autographs of the important family are strictly meant to be used to sign official documents. This is one of the best courses of action they can take in order to hopefully prevent future forgery, which is why it has been adhered to for so many years.

While much of the royal family has been known for their poise and elegance when out in public, some have been known to show plenty of affection toward their fans, especially the Duchess of Cambridge. Middleton has been the epitome of grace for the last few years and has continued to showcase that with everything she says and does. The royal family member has continued to prove just how remarkable she is, especially when considering following the numerous rules set in place by the palace. Middleton unfortunately cannot sign autographs for her fans, as it seems to pose too much of a risk of being forged.
