The Disappearance Of Mollie Tibbetts: The Missing Girl Who Has Captivated A Nation

A 20-year-old Iowa college student has gone missing, and although investigators say they are getting plenty of leads, they are no closer to finding out what happened to her. Mollie Tibbetts vanished sometime after 5:30 p.m. on July 19.

Tibbetts had gone to her boyfriend's house to take care of his dogs when she vanished. Her boyfriend said he last saw her on July 16, a day before he left to do a construction job.

On July 18, her boyfriend's brother dropped her off at her boyfriend's house in the late afternoon. He is not considered a suspect. A neighbor remembers seeing Tibbetts jogging. Her boyfriend received a Snapchat photo from her around 10 p.m. showing her inside the house that detectives say was taken that day, but they could not determine the time it was taken.

Her boyfriend sent her a text the following morning but did not notice that it went unseen. Later, her coworker called to say she had not come to work. Calls to her cell phone went to voice mail, and after failing to locate her, the family filed a missing persons report.

A Facebook group dedicated to finding Tibbetts was set up, and the news quickly went viral. Celebrities were among those who shared information regarding Tibbetts.

Investigators say each day they get hundreds of tips.

Unfortunately, the woman disappeared in a rural area where along with soybean plants, the corn is currently around eight or nine feet high. Although searches have been conducted by plane, investigators say it is difficult for them to see down into the corn rows from the air. Walking down each row is essentially the only way to make sure the search is thorough.

In addition to planes and helicopters, searches are being carried out by kayak and foot. Investigators also searched two pig farms.

Tibbetts' boyfriend remains hopeful she will be home soon. Her brothers have appeared on TV talking about her disappearance, and investigators, including the FBI, plan to keep following up on tips.
