The Chilling Details Of Jayne Mansfield’s Tragic Death In 1967

Hollywood legend Jayne Mansfield tragically died in a car accident at just 34 years old in 1967. Rising to stardom in the 1950s, Mansfield made her mark as both a model and an actress. She gained fame for her appearances in Playboy and for starring in films like “Too Hot to Handle” and “Promises! Promises!”

Mansfield had a vibrant career that included performances on Broadway and in nightclubs. She was married three times and had five children. One of them, Mariska Hargitay, also became an actress and is best known for her role on the television series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

On June 29, 1967, Mansfield died in a car crash in Louisiana, along with her boyfriend and the driver. At the time, her children – including Mariska – were asleep in the backseat. They survived with only minor injuries.

Mariska has continued to pay tribute to her mother, especially on her birthday. On April 19, 2023, which would have marked Mansfield’s 90th birthday, Mariska posted a vintage photo with the caption: “Happy birthday Mama. We live to love you more each day.”

The actress also explored her mother’s life in the documentary “My Mom Jayne,” which premiered on May 17, 2025, at the Cannes Film Festival. In the film, Mariska shared, “I don’t have any memories of her,” and added, “And then my dad died in 2006. I’ve never talked to my siblings about their experiences.”

Her siblings opened up about the accident in the documentary. Zoltan Hargitay, her brother, recalled not seeing Mariska after the crash – she had been thrown under the passenger seat and was later rescued. He also revealed that Mansfield had switched seats during the ride. Zoltan reflected that, had his mother stayed in the back, she might have survived.

On the night of June 28, 1967, Mansfield wrapped up a performance at the Gus Stevens Supper Club in Biloxi, Mississippi. Afterward, she set off for New Orleans to film a television appearance scheduled for the following day, The New York Times reported.

Accompanying her were her boyfriend, lawyer Sam Brody, their young driver named Ronnie Harrison, and three of her five children in the backseat: 3-year-old Mariska, and her brothers, Mickey Jr. and Zoltan.

In the early morning of June 29, their 1966 Buick convertible slammed into the rear of a tractor-trailer on U.S. Highway 90, around 30 miles outside of New Orleans. The truck had slowed near a mosquito fogging machine, and according to The New York Times, the thick fog of insecticide had obscured the driver’s view. The driver was unable to stop in time.

The impact of the crash pushed the car’s engine into the front seat, killing Mansfield, Brody, and the driver. Fortunately, Mariska and her brothers sustained only minor injuries. Despite early reports suggesting Mansfield had been decapitated, her undertaker, Jim Roberts, clarified to The New York Times in 1997 that her “head was attached as much as mine is.”

Mansfield’s funeral took place on July 3, 1967, in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, near where she had spent part of her youth. She was laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery, in her maternal family’s plot, The Desert Sun reported. Nearly 1,000 people attended, creating a “circus atmosphere,” according to The Times-Picayune.

Fans continued to visit her grave, often collecting soil as keepsakes – so much so that a truckload of topsoil was brought in to replenish it, according to The Morning Call.

Following the accident, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration mandated rear underride guards, now commonly referred to as “Mansfield Bars,” to prevent similar tragedies, according to Auto Week.

In May 2024, Mariska reflected that she still felt “like my mom’s here with me,” during an emotional tribute at Variety’s Power of Women event in New York.

“I always look for signs, and she’s here and she’s today with me,” she added.
