The Beach Boys are the quintessential California rock band from the 1960s, and their influence has continued for over 50 years since they first began performing.

This video of a live performance of Surfin' USA from 1963 shows the band in all their glory –– their perfect harmonies, tight musical rhythms, synchronized fashion style, and exuberant energy. It's no wonder they've been so influential to artists today. This showcases just how talented The Beach Boys were and puts today's musicians who overuse autotune to shame.

Filmed in black-and-white, the video looks like quite a relic, at least when it comes to music videos. The song Surfin' USA starts with it's immediately recognizable chords on the guitar, which then sets up the rest of the song. The guys then begin singing those famous words: "If everybody had an ocean / Across the U.S.A. / Then everybody'd be surfin' / Like Californi-a."

The energy of the performance is immediately noticeable, both within the music and physically with the band's stage presence. It also helps that the audience is full of screaming girls who are obviously star struck that The Beach Boys are singing right in front of them. Although musically they're very different bands, The Beach Boys were certainly the American answer to Britain's The Beatles—and the amount of female fans proves that!

Comprised of five members, The Beach Boys' original lineup included brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, as well as their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. They drew on varied musical styles to create their unique sound and were led by Brian, who composed, arranged, and produced their music.

The beautiful harmonies and complex musical arrangements within their music are undoubtedly what's kept their songs so fresh, even today after 50+ years. Known for their use of the so-called Wall of Sound technique, The Beach Boys might be known for making catchy pop songs, but their contribution to music history goes very deep.

When you compare some artists working today, who overuse technical filters such as autotune, it's easy to see who are the more genuine and talented musicians. This performance of The Beach Boys singing Surfin' USA really confirms that they didn't need artificial help to sound better, they had those skills naturally!

Still performing today, The Beach Boys' lineup has changed, due to deaths of some of the band members, but Brian Wilson, Mike Love, and Al Jardine are still around from the original lineup. They're even still touring, so if you're a fan, be sure to try and make it to one of their concerts while they're still performing, however the band has said that new music is now unlikely.
