Mariah Carey is one of the most famous music artists in the world. She is a singer, songwriter, producer and actress who is known for her impressive five-octave vocal range. The star first rose to fame in 1990 and was the first artist to have her first five singles reach number one on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Carey is also one of the best-selling artists of all time with over 200 million records sold worldwide.

The legendary artist has received many accolades throughout her long career. She has won five Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame for her contributions to the R&B genre as well as for popularizing hip hop music when it was first gaining traction in popular music. However, one of her greatest successes was becoming the "Queen of Christmas."

In 1994, Carey released her fourth studio album which was dedicated entirely to Christmas songs. One of the most enduring songs on the album is one Carey wrote called, "All I Want For Christmas Is You." Since the song's release, it has been met with praise and critical acclaim. The song is so popular that it is played almost continuously throughout the holiday season, which has prompted some controversy.

At the Stoneleigh P bar in Dallas, Texas, the song was banned from being played on the jukebox before December 1 and is only allowed to be played once per night after that date. This has prompted some of Carey's fans to declare the action a "war on Christmas" and the singer herself has responded to the bar's rule. Carey's hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time in 2019, which came 25 years after its initial release. Carey sat down for an interview with Billboard magazine in December 2020 to reflect on the song's success. She said:

"It was such a high point for me, career-wise, because of how much I love Christmas, and that's partially because I've always loved it that much. But I've had to go through the obstacles of my difficult, to say the least, childhood and starting out in this business so young and not really ever having that unified family or those types of holidays that I always felt like you see on the TV…"

Carey continued, "So having No. 1 in 2019 with 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' was a moment where I just sat there by myself at 3 in the morning looking at the Christmas tree lights and just really taking it in on a human level because you work your whole life for something. And … it's so exciting because it's at Christmas, which is my favorite, but it's also like, what a validating thing to have happen."

The singer added that the song's popularity was delightfully unexpected. "I never knew people were going to adapt the song that I wrote -- my first Christmas song that I ever wrote. How did I know that that was going to become a thing every year? I couldn't have known it," Carey told Billboard.

In 2021, the song is as popular as ever and Carey is still lauded as the "Queen of Christmas." However, not everyone enjoys how often the song gets played during the build-up to Christmas. National Review reporter, Kyle Smith, shared a photo on October 22, 2021, to Twitter of a sign that was posted near the jukebox at Stoneleigh P bar in Dallas. The sign reads:

"Mariah Carey's 'All I Want for Christmas is You' will be skipped if played before Dec. 1. After Dec. 1, the song is allowed one time a night."

One fan tweeted in response, "Is this the war on Christmas I've heard about?" To which Carey replied with a photo of herself in armor on a battlefield. According to the Spokesman-Review, the general manager of the bar told CNN she does not, "hate Mariah Carey, and I don't hate Christmas."

Carey feels that as soon as Halloween is over, it is time to celebrate Christmas. On October 31, 2021, Carey sent out a tweet captioned, "Ready? Let's go! #MariahSZN." It included a video of herself holding a baseball bat with candy cane stripes while smashing pumpkins that said, "It's Not Time" so they instead read, "It's Time."

Perth Now reports that Carey brings in an estimated 100 million dollars in royalties from "All I Want For Christmas Is You." It also set a record on Spotify for the most single-day streams at 17.223 million. The song is so popular it has been awarded a Guinness World Record for the highest-charting Christmas song on the Billboard Hot 100 by a solo artist.
