Days after 21-year-old conservationist Bindi Irwin tied the knot at a secret candlelit zoo wedding in Queensland, Australia last week, Bindi’s mother, Terri, reflected on the fact that her husband didn’t get the chance to see their daughter married.

On Terri’s Twitter account, the 55-year-old widow wrote an emotional post accompanied by a photo of the late Steve Irwin holding his baby son, Robert, at a wedding. Both Robert and Steve were wearing khaki, Steve’s perennial color of choice. The Australian zookeeper was best known for his charming role on the internationally broadcasted show The Crocodile Hunter. He died in 2006 at the age of 44 after a stingray pierced his chest while the star was filming a documentary, leaving behind two children Bindi and Robert, according to CNN.

“Remembering @RobertIrwin’s first wedding. I love that Steve and Robert both wore khaki. I know Steve would have worn khaki to Bindi & Chandler’s wedding, too,” Terri wrote on Twitter. “I wish he could have been there to see the most special day in his daughter’s life. We miss him so much.” In a reply to her mother’s emotional message, which has received an outpouring of support from users on the platform, Bindi wrote that her mother’s message was “beautiful

Bindi, who has become a conservationist in the spirit of her father, married 23-year-old Chandler Powell on March 25, according to CNN. In keeping with the family’s love for animals, Bindi and Chandler held the secret wedding in the gardens of Australia Zoo in Queensland. As cool and unusual as that many seem, the zoo still belongs to the Irwin family — in fact, the family lives there together — as it’s the same facility that Bindi’s grandparents opened in the 1970s.

“We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now,” Bindi wrote in an Instagram post accompanied by a photo of the newlyweds kissing.

The couple got engaged last December, and in typical Irwin fashion, the pair released a koala back into the wild to celebrate the occasion, according to USA Today. But beyond her love of animals, the koala celebration made some sense given that Chandler was holding one the day that the two met. In an interview with USA Today, the couple also said that they hoped to celebrate their marriage in a similarly unconventional way: a first croc feed.

While Bindi’s Instagram post didn’t seem to mention any crocodiles, she did make sure to remember her the original crocodile hunter, her father, on Bindi and Robert’s special day.

“Today we celebrated life and revelled in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens,” Bindi wrote on Instagram. “Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory. We shared tears and smiles and love.”
