It’s been 28 years since the legendary Steve Irwin went down on one knee and asked the woman of his dreams, Terri Irwin, for her hand in marriage. To celebrate the day, Terri Irwin has taken to social media to commemorate the beginning of their life together.

Steve passed away tragically after being stung by a stingray in September 2006.

The First Meeting

Terri was on a friends trip in Australia to visit the Great Barrier Reef when they drove past a tiny park. She was skeptical at first because of how crummy the park looked but entered the park anyhow. It was a decision that would change her entire life.

A crocodile show was ongoing at the park, and Steve, who was the host of the show, had mesmerized her with the way he talked about the big reptiles.

It was his humility and love towards animals that impelled Terri, then 27, to make the first move. She approached him after the show and they hit it off right away, spending the whole afternoon just talking. They got married eight months later.

How Steve Proposed To Terri

Covered in sweat, dirt, and even tree bark (just a typical workday for the Irwins), Terri was cooling down with a drink when Steve turned to her and said, “What d’ya reckon? Do you want to get married?” And that was how Steve and Terri became engaged right at their beloved Australia Zoo.

The couple went on to have two children, Bindi and Robert, both of whom are continuing their father’s legacy of educating the world on protecting wildlife.

In the summer of 2019, their daughter Bindi Irwin, 21, became engaged to her then-boyfriend Chandler Powell, a former professional wakeboarder.

"The most important thing is getting married here at Australia Zoo because this is where I feel closest to Dad," she said to ET. "So there's going to be a whole lot of planning that goes into the wedding day. But for me, at the heart of it all, I want to make sure that my Mum is there, my brother is there, and that it's a really close family event and we'll remember Dad, whether it's a clip that we play of Dad or something that just reminds us of him. But, you know, we'll plan it out perfectly."

In an interview, Terri explains why she hasn’t dated since Steve’s death in 2006. She says it’s because she feels a connection with Steve, still. She adds that he’s very special to her and continues to be, as evident in her tweet, “Life is constantly changing. Love is forever.”
