Teens Go On Grocery Store Run For Older Neighbors In Quarantine

Vulnerable people, such as the elderly, have even more of a challenge than most of us during self-isolation. Kind-hearted folk such as these teens from Maryland, are dropping groceries off for the elderly residents in their area to make life a little bit easier for them during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The sophomores attend Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. They decided that they wanted to give back to their community, and have been doing the grocery shopping for older neighbors to protect them during the coronavirus outbreak. The idea came from Dhruv Pai, who saw firsthand that his grandparents were too afraid to leave their house, so he asked his friends to help him drop them food and supplies.

In an interview with My MC Media, Pai said:

“My grandparents are in a vulnerable age, their vulnerable population, so are my neighbors. So they didn’t want to go to the grocery store to get groceries. So I offered to do it for them and then I realized a lot of people could be in a similar situation. That’s what incentivized me to create such a service.”

The group even has a name now – they have called themselves: Teens Helping Seniors. Not only do they provide a wonderful service for the vast elderly population in their area, but they are also ensuring they protect others by reinforcing correct social distancing. They drop the bags off on the porch and ask that payments be left there for them too.

They are now calling on other volunteers to help so that no one feels scared or alone at this time.

“Teens who are watching this right now, I want to say if you’re interested in an opportunity to help out your community, to help out your friends, your neighbors, your relatives, and then you know, it would be great if you would join us if you could help us because we feel like we’re really gonna make a big difference with this project.” Said sophomore, Matt Casdertano.

This story shows us how much good can come out of society, even when we are going through the worst of times. Share this uplifting example and let us know what kind things people in your neighborhood are doing.
