Two teenagers saved the life of a baby girl after a devastating car accident.

Hunter Hasenjaeger, 16, and Collin Barry, 17, were on their way home a little after midnight on June 30, 2017. They pulled over when they saw several crashed cars in the middle of a smoking heap. Another couple of pedestrians were already on the scene, and they frantically told the boys, "There's a baby in the car!"

The teens took out their smartphones and turned on their flashlights. The sight was horrific: A pregnant 27-year-old woman was barely clinging to life in the driver's seat, and a baby girl was strapped in a car seat and wailing.

The boys sprang into action. Hasenjaeger held the light steady while Barry reached into the backseat and unstrapped the infant. At every moment, Hasenjaeger tried to comfort the mother.

"I just kept telling the mom that help was on the way and that her baby is okay," he explained. The other pedestrians had already called the police, so Hasenjaeger stayed with the mother during what turned out to be her final moments. While she survived long enough for the paramedics to arrive and transport her to the hospital, she died from her injuries later that day. Her unborn child died as well.

The silver lining to this terrible tragedy is that her one-year-old baby was unharmed. She was released into the custody of her grandmother after being examined by doctors.

As for Hasenjaeger, he said that the incident left him shaken and crying. He'd never expected to deal with anything like this, especially at the tender age of 16. He took solace in the fact that the baby girl survived. He even visited her at home.

"I brought [the victim's] family over food and brought the baby a little teddy bear," he said. "That helped me cope with it."

The driver responsible for the crash, 23-year-old Jacob Kaminski, was arrested on a plethora of charges. He was originally cited for drunk driving, cannabis possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He was eventually charged with an aggravated DUI and the reckless homicide of an unborn child. The victim's family was present at his bond hearing.
