Teenage Lifeguard Helps Mother Give Birth After She Was 'Crawling Out Of The Pool'

When Natalie Lucas went to work as a lifeguard, she knew what she was signing up for. She liked the job so much that she was in her third year of the job. Lifeguards are known to save lives; they jump into action or the water when someone swimming needs to be saved.
Lucas wasn’t expecting to bring life into the world, rather than save it when attending work in the July of 2022. Watching the pool and swimmers, as usual, she noticed a couple walk in that seemed to keep her attention. The couple, Tessa Rider and Matthew Jones, went to the pool that day so Rider could find relief in her nine-month pregnancy.
Watching Rider get into the pool, the lifeguard felt the need to keep an eye on her just in case. Thank goodness she did because the unexpected soon occurred. Lucas watched as the pregnant Rider tried to get out of the pool with a struggle. When Lucas went to check on Rider, Jones let the lifeguard know that their baby seemed to be on its way. Jones began to call 911, but it was too late. As his wife pulled off her swimsuit, everyone noticed that the baby was already on its way into the world.
Lucas shared that she was nervous about assisting in the birthing process, but she remained calm for the family. Gathering towels and medical supplies, Lucas said it all happened very quickly. Within five minutes of getting the birthing mom situated, her baby boy had entered the world.

In an interview with Good Morning America, Lucas shared when she noticed that something was wrong. "She had a (pool) noodle to try to relieve some tension from all that weight on the front of her, I'm assuming, and then she started crawling out of the pool ... and I was like, alright, I need to go check to make sure everything's OK there," Lucas said.
She said that immediately after walking over, the husband shared they were in labor. "I walk over and Matthew, the husband, he says to me, 'We're having the baby right now.' I'm like, 'OK!' Adrenaline kicks in right then and there," the lifeguard shared.
She went on to say she needed to stay calm for the birthing family. "The couple was very calm about it all while it was all happening, which kind of surprised me. So I made sure to keep my head on and stay with them, keep asking them questions, keep them focused on the baby and (make sure) that they (were) the most comfortable."
Within five minutes, Tobin Thomas Rider was born. Jones shared that he was grateful for the lifeguard's courage and help. "I liken Natalie's presence to like a doula or a midwife. ... She was super focused on Tessa. So in that moment, I did not have to worry about my wife. I could direct the entirety of my focus onto Tobin and what Tobin needed to be safe and healthy," he shared.
The family said the situation was one-of-a-kind but that they couldn’t be happier to have their sweet son. "The situation he created around his birth was pure chaos. And now that he's in the world, it's quite the opposite of that."
