Teen With Down Syndrome Asks Girlfriend To Homecoming Dance With A Touching 'Proposal'

In a case of true love for a pair of individuals with Down Syndrome, David Matthew Cowan, a senior at Seminole High School in Sanford, Fla., stunned Saris Marie Garcia, a junior cheerleader for Altamonte Springs' Lake Brantley High School, at a football game, confidently walking over to her on the sidelines and dramatically and romantically asking her to the homecoming dance.

This wasn't an event between two people who didn't know each other all that well or had recently met. In fact, Garcia's mother, Wanda Cruz, told Fox News that "they've always been together" since meeting in a speech therapy class at the age of 3 in nearby Orlando. "It's just so cute how their relationship progressed and blossomed," she added. "They are always so genuine and sweet and happy together."

On this special evening, Cowan carried balloons, a bouquet and a sign that asked, "Will you be my sunshine to homecoming?" After they hugged, he dropped to a knee to verbally ask her. Needless to say, she was stunned by the gesture and, after ripping her pom-poms off, reading the sign and showing a display of delirious happiness, she said that she'd love to as her fellow cheerleaders screamed around her.

Pictures and videos of the happy couple have gone viral as many around the world have been taken in by this story of true love. Cruz said that the two of them "had the time of their lives" at that dance. They even received a special moment of appreciation when the principal of the school brought them up to the stage to introduce them to everyone, and those in attendance "went wild. They were ... screaming and cheering."

The two have already experienced considerable success in their young lives. Garcia has been a model, and the two were recently featured in Times Square in connection with Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

After their shared experience at speech therapy class, the two families separately moved to Miami, and they attended the same school in that area for a couple of years. The families later made their way back to Central Florida, and Cowan and Garcia have been dating since they were 14. He's now 19 while she's 18.
