Teen Wasn't Allowed To Enroll In School Because Her Mom 'Broke the Dress Code'

Everyone has heard a story or two about a school enforcing some absurd school dress policy. Usually, these stories involve a pair of jean shorts that are an inch too short or a prom dress that was not in line with school policy.

It is not every day you hear of a child being denied admission to a school because of his or her parent's choice of attire. However, this is exactly what Joselyn Lewis says happened when she and her daughter arrived at Madison High School for enrollment.

Lewis says she at first thought school administrators mistook her for a student when they told her she was not allowed on campus the way she was dressed. But when she explained to them she was there with her daughter, they still insisted that she leave the campus.

Lewis says she was wearing a T-shirt dress with a picture of Marilyn Monroe on the front of it. She also wore a headscarf and flip-flops. She says she understands her choice of attire would not be permissible for students but does not understand why it was a problem for her while enrolling her daughter in school.

“I can wear what I want to wear. I don’t have to get all dolled up to enroll her to school," she told Click2Houston.

Lewis said a school official told her that the dress she was wearing was too short and head scarfs were not allowed in the school. Lewis says she could make no sense of this explanation because her dress fully covered her body and stopped just above her knee.

Lewis says she asked to see the dress code for parents but there was none in existence. Lewis did not agree immediately to leave the premises and school officials called the police on her. The angry mother says by the time the police officer arrived to escort her from the premises she was on the phone with a member of the school board.

Lewis says she was attempting to enroll her daughter in a new school because she was being bullied at her previous school. She explained to a local media source that her hair was being done at the time and that is why she was wearing the scarf. But she says the point is she should not have to explain why there was a scarf on her head.

Social media users have been split on the issue. Many have left comments in support of Lewis and some supported the school's decision to ask her to leave the premises. Where do you stand?
