Tuesday, March 12, 2019, started like every other day. Matt Stauffer, 14, got on the school bus at about 7:30 a.m., which is his usual time. Every day, his bus driver gives him a friendly hello, so Matt's always known the driver's a pretty good guy.

The school bus driver is always really cheerful with the kids, greeting them with a smiling hello and wishing them all a good day. After all, they live in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, which is a small place. Most everybody knows each other around the area.

But Matt could tell that something was different this particular Tuesday. As Matt Stauffer got on the bus, he noticed that the other kids looked worried. Their bus driver wasn't giving Matt his usual greeting, so Matt turned around to check out what was happening. What he saw wasn't good.

The bus driver's body was slumped over the bus steering wheel, and his foot was on the gas! The only way the driver wasn't falling completely out of his seat was because he was safely strapped into his seat with his safety belt. But the bus was still going, at full speed!

That's when Matt Stauffer went from being an ordinary teenager to superhero. Matt quickly reached over and grabbed the bus keys. He turned the bus off and then put the keys into his own pocket. That way, nobody could get hurt.

Matt encouraged the students to get off the bus, which they all did in a calm and collected manner. Then, he had one of the students call 911.

How did all the students stay so calm and cool-headed? Thankfully, they had just gone over bus safety drills the week before. When the police and paramedics arrived, they were impressed with Matt's leadership skills and with how organized the entire bus of students were.

Matt was hailed as a hero by his school superintendent, Brian Gasper. Gasper points out that he's proud not only of Matt and his ability to handle a stressful crisis situation, but he's also impressed with all the kids who were involved. The entire group of students made Carbon County proud that day!

When asked about the incident, Matt remained really humble about everything he'd accomplished. He feels he just tried to do the right thing and help out in a challenging situation. Matt knows the bus driver, and he knows how much the driver helps all the students every day.

The whole community has sent their congratulations and hopes for the driver to have a speedy full recovery!
