Thinking about an 18-year-old will usually have you picturing someone who is leaving high school and just starting their life. This is a common situation for most 18-year-olds, but not all of them.

At just 18, Nathan Phillips was faced with the decision of becoming his little brother's legal guardian.

His brother, Luke, was 12 years old when the situation arose. They had both just lost their parents.

Their mom had passed at only 53 years old when cancer took her. Their father was in a head-on collision while riding his motorcycle. This collision claimed his life.

Luke was on that motorcycle too. His foot was caught under the trucks tire. This ripped the skin from his foot and destroyed his toes. He ended up losing his pinky toe and half of his big toe.

Luke was in the hospital recovering from the accident. Nathan couldn't bring himself to tell him about their father's death. He actually ended up flat out lying to him. The doctors told him not to tell him at first as it could set him into a panic attack and wouldn't be able to have his surgery. Before the surgery, he had to tell Luke that their father was ok. Nathan said this was one of the hardest things he has ever done.

Luke ended up having to have a skin graft to repair the skin damages from the accident.

They have had a lot to deal with but they are finding a way. Nathan has had to sacrifice some things but he doesn't blame Luke, or anyone for that matter.

Their friends even set up a fundraiser for them and raised over $14k.

Nathan feels that he has learned to live every day to the fullest and not to worry about the little things.

While he is upset about losing hid mother and father, he knows that he can't dwell on it. He has to keep his focus on taking care of Luke.

He does sometimes feel like he has to do everything by himself but he doesn't blame anyone. He knows it's just how his cards were dealt and he is ok with that. It's made him grow up a bit quicker but he will be just fine. They now have a bond like they never had before.
