A teenage girl recently got the chance to save a man’s life at the most unlikely of moments. 17-year-old Kayla Rose of Irvington, New Jersey was out walking her dog, Milkshake, early one morning last week when she heard scratching coming from a parked car.

Not quite sure what she was hearing on her otherwise uneventful walk, Kayla called out in the direction of the car, a black Nissan Altima. Kayla was shocked to hear a man’s voice coming from the car’s trunk, begging her for help.

Kayla immediately got into action. Grabbing Milkshake, she went to a neighbor’s house, banging on the door until her neighbor answered and called 911. Local police and firefighters arrived soon after, quickly freeing the man from the trunk.

In the ensuing investigation, law enforcement determined that the man, who remains unidentified, was carjacked in nearby Hillside, New Jersey.

Brandishing firearms, the man was carjacked by two assailants, who forced him to withdraw large sums of money from several ATMs. Once the victim had made the withdrawals, the two suspects bound his hands with rope and tossed him into the trunk of the car.

Despite the scary situation and spending a night in below freezing temperatures, the victim only had a few scratches on his head.

Kayla is being hailed as a hero by her neighbors and local law enforcement. Speaking with reporters from PIX 11 News, Marie Banks, Kayla’s mother, beamed with pride at her daughter’s actions, saying that she saved the man from dying from hypothermia.

Kayla herself has denied that she is a hero, confessing that she is still very shaken up from the event.

Meanwhile, police are investigating the carjacking, combing the neighborhood for evidence and trying to find witnesses.

Those who know anything about the incident are encouraged to contact Union County Crime Stoppers by phone at 908-654-TIPS or online at uctip.org. Those with information can remain anonymous. A reward of $10,000 is also being offered for information leading to the arrest of the two suspects.
