Teen Friends Diagnosed With Cancer Just Months Apart Lean On Each Other Through Their Journeys

Friendship often reveals its true power in the most unexpected moments, and for two high school sophomores in Georgia, that bond became a lifeline during a life-altering battle.
J.P. Thomas and Camilo Henao, longtime friends and students in the same Atlanta-area school, found themselves navigating a frightening chapter when both were diagnosed with cancer within months of one another. Their story has since resonated widely as an example of courage, hope, and unwavering support.
Atlanta News First (ANF) shared their story. Thomas’ diagnosis began with nothing more than knee pain. A routine visit to the doctor led to tests that uncovered something far more serious: Burkitt’s lymphoma, an aggressive and fast-progressing cancer. Reflecting on the shock of his discovery, Thomas explained: “There were spots all over my body… I had them on my skull, shoulders, arms, hip and legs.”
His treatment began at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, a pediatric care center known for its dedication to young patients facing complex medical conditions. Throughout Thomas’ chemotherapy treatments, Henao stayed by his side, determined to lift his friend’s spirits. He told ANF: “I was like, ‘Dang, that has to suck.’”
What neither boy expected was that only a few months later, Henao himself would receive a cancer diagnosis. His first week of chemotherapy, he recalled, was “the worst week I’ve had in my life.” By then, Thomas had concluded his own treatments and stepped into the role of supporter.
As Henao endured long hours in the hospital, Thomas remained close, offering the same comfort his friend had once given him. When Thomas later learned he was officially cancer-free, he declined the traditional bell-ringing celebration at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, choosing instead to wait for Henao so they could mark the milestone together.

Thomas’ decision to postpone ringing the symbolic victory bell became a defining moment in their journey. He told the outlet:
“Why would I have the joy of ringing the bell when my friend is still going through the same thing?”
His gesture highlighted the deep sense of unity they had formed and the emotional weight tied to each stage of recovery.
When Nov. 21, 2025, arrived, both young men finally stood side by side at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, ready to celebrate an achievement many patients dream of: remission. Together, they rang the bell, a sound that echoed through the hospital halls as a testament to perseverance, grit, and the strength of friendship. Looking back, Thomas shared that humor helped them endure their hardest days, saying:
“We joke about losing hair a lot.”
Their families, who spent countless hours in hospital rooms and waiting areas, praised the team at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for their compassionate care. Camilo Henao’s father expressed profound gratitude, telling ANF:
“It’s not a hospital,” he continued: “It’s an embassy of heaven on earth.”
Thomas and Henao’s story continues to inspire. Their shared resilience emphasized the importance of standing together even when the road forward feels uncertain. Their experience serves as a reminder that while cancer can change the course of a young person’s life, it cannot diminish the strength found in loyalty, love, or friendship. The boys’ joint bell-ringing celebration remains a powerful symbol of triumph – one made even more meaningful because they reached the moment side by side.
