Teen Dies On A School Trip Because Of Her Tampon

It took the family of 16-year-old Sara Manitoski a year to figure out what had happened to her during a school trip in March 2017. When Sara’s friends woke up in the morning, they left her sleeping. After breakfast, Sara was still in bed, oblivious to the alarm that was going off. When her friends tried to wake her up, they found that she was unresponsive.

After about nine months, health workers determined that Sara had a severe infection called toxic shock syndrome, or TSS. One of the causes of this condition is prolonged tampon use.

The Dangers Of TSS

Tampon boxes come with a warning about TSS. It’s a very real infection that can occur if strains of certain bacteria, such as staphylococcus aureus, are on a tampon that’s inserted in the body. While wearing the tampon, the bacteria have a good chance of thriving in the moist, dark environment.

Sara’s sister, Carli Manitoski, took to Facebook to warn women about the dangers of wearing tampons for a prolonged period of time. She said that one of the signs that her sister had the condition was stomach cramps. Only one in 100,000 Americans will get TSS in their lifetime. Although TSS is rare, Carli knows two women who have developed the infection. She hopes that she can help educate people about the fact that TSS is associated with wearing extremely absorbent tampons for more than eight hours at a time.

Symptoms Of TSS

Some of the most common symptom associated with TSS include:

  • Sudden fever
  • Low blood pressure
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea or diarrhea
  • A red rash on the hands or feet
  • Disorientation
  • Muscle aches or headache
  • Red mucous membranes
  • Seizures

Women who have any of these symptoms while wearing a tampon should remove it immediately and contact a doctor.
