Whether you’re a teenager or an adult, the way you dress says a lot about you. People love expressing themselves through their hair, makeup, and clothing.

However, not everyone attends a school or job that appreciates the effort some people put into their appearances.

Many schools have enacted stricter and stricter dress codes as the years go on, and parents and students are not happy with the outcome.

Schools aren’t allowing children to express their individualities through their clothing anymore, and it seems like uniforms are becoming the norm in many areas. Many controversies have stemmed from school’s decisions to ban certain articles of clothing or styles of dress, and for one teenager, her story begins when her dad decided to fight back against the school’s rules.

Demetria Alarono, a thirteen-year-old girl who is enrolled in middle school in California, got taken out of class on a boiling hot day for her clothing. The teacher noted that her romper was entirely too short to be wearing in class and could potentially distract the male students that are around her. Demetria called her father, named Tony, to bring her a change of clothes, which ended up being a tank top and a pair of shorts.

However, the school still didn’t approve of her new outfit and said that her shorts were once again too short. Demetria ended up being sent home, and she and her father could not understand how they could distract from her learning process all because of her shorts. On a 90 degree day, she was baffled that the school would not allow her to wear shorts. She was there to learn, and she could do that in any clothing that was comfortable for the weather.

Her father became outraged at the situation and decided to make a post on the popular website NextDoor.com about the strict dress code being enforced at the school. He was wondering what other people in the community thought about the rules, but he never expected to receive the reaction that was about to come. Loads of people from the community came forward pouring their support to the dad and his daughter, feeling that the dress code was too strict and also that it was promoting body issues that many women deal with.

Tony felt that in such a hot climate, her shorts were not inappropriate. To tell a teenage girl that her clothes were distracting to men was in a way, over-sexualizing his daughter. He feels that strict rules can cause emotional issues that make young girls question the way their bodies look and wants the dress code amended. He’s now speaking out against the school’s enforcement, and it’s amazing to see how far this father is willing to go to stick up for his daughter and other young girls out there.

What do you think about this story? Did your school have a dress code? Do you think it is right for the school to dictate what girls can wear because it can be "distracting for boys"? We want to hear your opinions - so make sure to let us know!
