Adrianne Ledesma, a 17-year-old resident of Lincoln Park, Michigan, was helping her father recuperate from brain surgery when he began having a seizure. Adrianne did what anyone would do in that situation, immediately contacting 911.

As her father suffered on the floor, Adrianne was unable to get through to emergency responders. Frightened and in a panic, Adrianne dialed 911 a second time.

While Adrianne was able to get through this time, the response from the authorities on the other end was not what she had hoped for. Uncertain that her call had gone through, Adrianne began swearing just as Officer Robert McFarland answered the phone.

According to Action News Investigation, Adrianne told Officer McFarland what was happening, giving her name and address and asking for an ambulance. Before dispatching emergency workers, Officer McFarland felt the need to correct Adrianne’s behavior, telling her not to swear over the phone. Adrianne responded with more frustration, cursing and asking if he was going to send an ambulance. Fed up, Officer McFarland replied that he would not be sending an ambulance to Adrianne’s house.

Adrianne called 911 several more times, continuing to have heated exchanges with Officer McFarland. Uncertain of what was going to happen with her father, Adrianne drove to the Lincoln Park Police Department to ask for an ambulance in person, unaware that Officer McFarland had finally requested the fire department send paramedics to the teen’s house.

Arriving at the police station, Officer McFarland arrested Adrianne on the spot, charging her with disorderly conduct and “abusing 911,” a charge that does not actually exist in the state of Michigan.

When news of Adrianne’s ordeal began spreading, Officer McFarland found himself the subject of much criticism. Police Chief Tom Karnes said that McFarland’s conduct was not the department’s finest moment in an interview with reporters from WXYZ 7 News.

For his poor response to Adrianne’s request for help, Officer McFarland was suspended for two weeks without pay and had to undergo anger management training. McFarland later filed a complaint against his unpaid suspension through a police union, but ended up losing the grievance when an outside arbitrator upheld the punishment.
