In a Walmart located in Iowa, a public-school teacher by the name of Leland Michael, had interesting encounters with three sets of parents during a day of school supply shopping. The topic of conversation was centered around complaints for the amount of school supplies needed to be purchased by parents. While in the section designated for school supplies, Leland Michael met two sets of complaining parents. Upon finishing gathering the items he needed, he went to the register to check out. At the register he met another concerned parent. This time the encounter was completely different than the first.

Once arriving home, Michael shared his shopping experience with the world on Facebook. He told of how his interaction with one individual sparked an inspiration within him. That morning he was feeling unenthused as he was doing his shopping. Parents stopped him to complain about the amount of school supplies needed to be purchased by parents that year. One parent stated that shopping for the supplies was ridiculous and was puzzled as to how teachers thought that parents could afford so many supplies.

But Michael already had a cart filled with school supplies for this year’s incoming students.

Michael finished his shopping and headed towards the register. Upon arriving at the register to check out, Michael stood in line behind a man buying school supplies for his daughter. The gentleman finished paying for his items. Before turning to leave he stopped and acknowledged Michael as a teacher. He thanked him for everything he does.

The gentleman had noticed the cart full of school supplies and told Michael that he wanted to help as much as he could. Following his statement, he handed Michael a $25 Walmart gift card to aid in his school supply purchase. The daughter gave Michael a big smile and the duo left with their purchased items. In one shopping experienced Michael encountered two very different viewpoints from parents shopping for school supplies.

The message left by the complaining parents was that investing in education is not important and teachers are greedy and should not be trusted. The message left by the generous father informed his daughter that school is very important and should be invested in. We should go above and beyond to ensure its success.

The powerful message from the father left Michael feeling much more enthusiastic about his shopping experience. His daughter would start the school year with a much more positive view on teachers and on the necessary investment of education. What is your view on school supply shopping?
