Tammy Slaton, who found fame on TLC’s hit show “1000-Lb Sisters,” opened up about the dramatic change in her health and body since she began sharing her story on television in 2020.
In detail, the series followed the lives of Tammy and her sister Amy Slaton, who once weighed over 1,000 pounds together and depended on each other for support. The show became a guilty pleasure for many viewers in the United States, who eagerly followed the sisters on their health journeys.
When it first aired, Tammy and Amy had a combined weight exceeding 1,000 pounds, with Tammy alone weighing approximately 725 pounds. Due to her size, she relied heavily on mobility aids, such as a wheelchair and walker, and required an oxygen tube to assist with breathing.
Tammy’s health journey was far from smooth. She faced intense personal and physical challenges, including multiple stints in rehabilitation for food addiction. One of her most heartbreaking setbacks was the loss of her husband, Caleb Willingham, in 2023 at just 40 years old.
Despite the difficulties, Tammy committed herself to making life-altering changes. Her perseverance eventually led her to qualify for bariatric surgery, a significant milestone in her fight for a healthier life. Over time, she managed to lose an astonishing 540 pounds, a transformation she proudly shared with fans on social media.
In an interview with the Ezell Film Company, Tammy reflected on her progress, marveling at her current appearance in comparison to her past. She described her weight loss as shedding the equivalent of “three whole people” and admitted she sometimes couldn’t believe how far she had come.
One major obstacle in her path was the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially required to lose 30 pounds for surgery, isolation and limited activity during lockdown caused her to gain an additional 100 pounds – effectively raising the target to 130. Even with the increased challenge, Tammy pushed through and met her goal.

In 2025, Tammy opted to undergo surgery to remove excess skin following her successful weight loss. Slaton opened up to PEOPLE about her emotional and physical journey since the operation. Reflecting on the moment she was approved for the operation, she shared:
“After six years and losing over 500 pounds, I was finally approved for surgery. I was just overwhelmed with excitement. I worked really hard for this, and now it’s here. I’m pretty sure it was noticeable on my face how immediately shocked and then overwhelmed with joy I was.”
Despite undergoing various surgeries throughout her transformation, Tammy confessed that this particular operation stirred the most anxiety.
“I was really nervous for the skin removal surgery because I was really just kind of afraid of how I’m gonna feel looking at myself without the belly there,” she admitted.
The anticipation the night before proved to be especially intense.
“The night before my surgery, I was, like, seriously freaking terrified. I was even more nervous about having skin removal surgery than I was for the (sleeve gastrectomy) surgery because they’re actually cutting the whole belly!” she confessed.
Ultimately, the outcome far exceeded expectations. Tammy experienced a smoother recovery than anticipated, even impressing her medical team.
“I surprised the doctors with how well my body was healing. I ended up coming home from Pittsburgh, like, four days early,” she revealed.
Even years after “1000-Lb Sisters” began, Tammy has continued to make progress in her health journey, driven by the remarkable changes already achieved. Her resilience and dedication remain evident as she embarks on a new chapter in life, determined to build a future that reflects the strength she has gained through her transformation.
