Dr. Erick Bostrom wasn’t satisfied with being an average physician. He wanted to make a lasting impact on every new family that came to him for mateinity care. He knew that he could build a strong relationship with his patients when he entered the Riverwood Healthcare System in Minnesota, and that’s exactly what he’s been doing with each handmade blanket he skillfully crafts.

Bostrom is a young doctor in his early thirties that comes from a small section of Minnesota. He got this heartwarming idea after a colleague suggested that he use his surgical stitching skills to get the attention of the families he works with. The only problem was that Bostrom soon found out his sewing talents didn’t work as well on fabrics as it did people.

He didn’t let that stop him! Bostrom decided to buy a second-hand sewing machine, and he learned everything he could, Fox 9 News reports. He humbly gives most of the credit to his mother and sister. They helped him beat the learning curve a lot faster than he could have on his own.

The determined doctor didn’t just stop there. If you visited his home, then you’d find an entire room dedicated to his newfound obsession. He even dabbles in extravagant embroidery techniques.

The precious projects started as simple housewarming gifts for new parents, but Bostrom is now able to include all of the birth certificate information sewn into each little blanket.

You haven’t even heard the most amazing part of the story yet. Each blanket takes a whopping three hours to put together. That’s a huge sacrifice when you realize the extremely demanding schedule most physicians face daily.

Lacie Heitalati received her daughter’s new blanket at their first checkup date, and she was blown away by it. Lacie went on to say that it’s something they will cherish for their entire life. Bostrom explains that many of his patients are brought to tears when he gives them their surprise presents.

The town of Mora, Minnesota is particularly understaffed due to being a very rural area, according to the Star Tribune. That means that Bostrom usually needs to deliver a baby around every two weeks in spite of being a family doctor. He has to expand his specialties to meet the needs of those around him. That’s how Bostrom found himself in this unique situation without planning to be a maternity doctor.

Bostrom expressed that most of his time is spent taking care of patients who are suffering from serious medical conditions, but he feels that delivering a new life into the world is an experience of pure joy.
