How Hawn Got Her Start

Hawn has easily become a household name over her many years in the entertainment industry. Born on Nov. 21, 1945, in Washington, D.C., Hawn had one sister growing up and was raised Jewish. Showing true talent and ambition from an early age, she began taking dance lessons when she was three years old and even appeared in a few stage productions as a child.

By the time she was 19, she had run and taught at a ballet school after she’d dropped out of studying drama at university. Hawn worked as a professional dancer before she moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1966, working as both a dancer and playing small roles on television. Her dance background clearly helped her establish a strong presence when performing that worked to her advantage in her career.

Following her move to Los Angeles, Hawn didn’t go unnoticed for long before she was soon seen as an “It” girl of the 1960s. She was cast to play the stereotypical dumb blonde in a number of roles and was landed the role of a regular cast member on the sketch comedy show “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In,” which aired from 1968 until 1973.

After working as an actress on television for a few years, she shifted her career focus and headed for the big screen. One of her first roles in the film industry was in the 1969 film “Cactus Flower,” which earned her an Academy Award win for Best Supporting Actress. This set her career in motion, helping the star quickly establish herself and really make her name known in Hollywood.

An Evolving Career

Over the next few decades, her filmography grew to include all genres of films, but it was clear that her specialty was in comedy. She was also nominated one more time for an Oscar in 1981 for “Private Benjamin,” but didn’t take home the award. Hawn has continued to show off her wide array of talents for many years through a long list of films she has starred in.

In the 1990s, she starred in the commercially successful comedy “Bird on a Wire,” as well as the drama “Death Becomes Her,” which also featured Bruce Willis and Meryl Streep. Starring opposite Bette Midler and Diane Keaton, Hawn was a show-stopper in the critically successful film “The First Wives Club.” In 1999, she starred in a remake of the 1970 Neil Simon hit, “The Out-of-Towners.” Other well-known roles of hers over the years include “Shampoo” from 1975, “Overboard” in 1987, and “The Banger Sisters” in 2002.

In more recent years, Hawn has continued to grace our screens with her incredible acting abilities. Since the 2010s, the star has only been in a few projects but has still continued to amaze fans and critics alike with her great performances. In 2013, she lent her voice to portray the role of Peggy McGee in an episode of the Disney animated series “Phineas and Ferb.” In 2017, she made her return to the big screen alongside Amy Schumer in the comedy “Snatched,” and also narrated the film “SPF-18.” In 2018, Hawn made a cameo as Mrs. Claus in the Netflix film “The Christmas Chronicles,” and played the role again in its 2020 sequel, “The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two,” this time in a starring role.

Russell’s Claim To Fame

Russell made his feature film debut in “It Happened at the World’s Fair,” although the role was uncredited. He finally got his name on the small screen in 1963 with a guest-starring role on the ABC series “Our Man Higgins.” Russell continued to get roles on a few different ABC series throughout the start of his career, ultimately leading him to work with a partnering network. He signed a 10-year contract with The Walt Disney Company in 1966, taking his career to the next level. While working with the popular company, he continued to get work in films and television shows through other networks.

Alongside his developing acting career, Russell also had a baseball career in the early 1970s. He played for a few teams, including the Bend Rainbows and the California Angels, now known as the Los Angeles Angels. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury to his throwing arm while playing in 1973, causing him to retire from the sport the same year. He then made a choice to return to acting, picking up jobs again easily.

He went on to work with director John Carpenter on a series of projects during the 1980s. He also made his return to Disney to provide his voice for the animated movie “The Fox and the Hound” in 1981. His career has continued all the way through the 2020s, acquiring a variety of roles and receiving favorable feedback and accolades along the way. Russell won his first award in 1997 for Favorite Actor in an Adventure/Drama at the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards. One of his more recent awards was at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards in 2016 for Best Actor. He was inducted into the Fangoria Horror Hall of Fame the same year.

Finally Finding Love

Prior to finding one another, Hawn and Russell both had previous relationships and marriages. Hawn’s first marriage was to a dancer named Gus Trikonis. The couple got married in 1969 but unfortunately split up in 1973. She continued to search for love and dated a few other people before she met Bill Hudson, a singer from the Hudson Brothers. The couple got married in 1976 and had two children together, Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson. However, their marriage did not last, and they ultimately divorced in 1980.

Just a few years later, in 1983, Hawn began dating Russell. However, this was not the first time that they had met. In fact, their history is what makes their love story all the more wonderful and beautiful to witness. Initially meeting in 1966 on the set of a Disney movie titled “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band,” it would be nearly two decades later when they worked together on the movie “Swing Shift” in 1983, leading to them finally getting together. It appeared that their age difference was the problem when they first met, as Hawn revealed much later in a BBC interview, and said:

“I was 21 and he was 16. I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young. Then, years later we met up again, and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. We both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell.”

Spending Quality Time Together

After getting together, Hawn and Russell became completely inseparable as a couple and would even star in more movies together later on, including “Overboard” in 1987. The movie went on to be a huge success, and the happy couple even starred in a handful of other films together throughout their careers.

Before he began his relationship with Hawn in 1983, Russell was married to actress Season Hubley for a few years. Together they had one son named Boston. Famously, Hawn and Rusell brought their children from their previous marriages together and started their blended family. In 1986, the couple had a child of their own, Wyatt Russell, bringing their brood to four.

Hawn and Russell are famous for their blended family and how close they all are. Spending quality time together has been crucial to their family dynamic and is one of their priorities in life. Russell spoke more about this during an interview with Closer Weekly in 2018. “We always trim the tree on Christmas Eve, and we have a big meal,” he said. The grandkids put their pajamas on and hang up their stockings. We get the fire going, and when it gets dark, we always choose someone to read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.’”

With such a tight-knit family, it’s pretty unsurprising that many of Hawn and Russell’s children have followed in their footsteps and gone into show business themselves. In fact, all of their kids except Boston have entered the entertainment industry, making a name for themselves in the process.

Why They Won’t Get Married

Although the family is of the utmost importance to the couple, their relationship is a bit interesting in the fact that they have chosen to never get married. Hawn openly discussed the topic in a 2007 interview with Woman’s Day magazine, explaining why exactly she doesn’t expect to head down the aisle to marry Russell. “Because we have done just perfectly without marrying,” Hawn explained. “I already feel devoted and isn’t that what marriage is supposed to do? So as long as my emotional state is in a state of devotion, honesty, caring and loving, then we’re fine.”

While speaking with Woman’s Day, Hawn also mentioned their children and blended family and how she and Russell have managed to raise them into “beautiful people.” “We did a great job there, and we didn’t have to get married to do that,” she explained.” “I like waking up every day and seeing that he is there and knowing that I have a choice. There is really no reason to marry.”

Considering theirs is one of Hollywood’s longest-lasting relationships, they’ve clearly proven their point that marriage is unnecessary for their relationship, as long as there is love, respect, and mutual compassion for one another. Russell even weighed in on the topic in an interview with the Daily Mail in 2018 and said:

“Everyone has their marker on what is really important and where you draw the line. For Goldie and me, that core value was this: the kids come first. That big movie I turned down came at an age when they really needed one of us around.”

Inside Their Gorgeous Home

Since Russell and Hawn have been together for so long, it only makes sense that they would be sharing their lives together in the same home. They have one home in Aspen, Colorado, as well as another in Los Angeles, California. Speaking with CBS Sunday Morning back in November 2020, the couple explained that they had lived in their home in Los Angeles for about four years at that time. “We built it, and it’s just so great,” Hawn said.

Hello! Magazine reported that their home contains a home gym, a beautiful garden, and even more luxurious rooms inside. Inside, one room contains a television mounted perfectly in the center above a fireplace adorned with house plants. The wooden flooring and fluffy cream rug help make the place feel homey in contrast to the lavish staircase and huge chandelier in another section of the house. Their kitchen and dining room are open plan, leaving plenty of room for entertaining guests and their large family.

According to Hello! Magazine, the home gym is decked out with floor-to-ceiling mirrors and is equipped with a spin bike and a small treadmill. Hawn has even been seen dancing and working out on her trampoline to help her have fun while staying in shape. The home is just as stunning on the outside as it is inside, thanks to its beautiful garden. Hello! Magazine reported that the area is large enough for the whole family to gather and has a few quirks, including a giant cow statue and a meditating section.

With so many intricate details, the home is incredibly inviting and seems to really be loved and cared for — the perfect place for Russell and Hawn to live together.
