'In the Summertime' was a one-hit-wonder by the British rock band, Mungo Jerry. The band name was inspired by the poem called Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer. The group's front was a man by the name of Ray Dorset. His distinctive look included a big head of hair and a beard.
Music history has been filled with a series of one-hit-wonders. Songs like "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves or "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin. This is another of those tunes and is a must-hear for anyone uninitiated out there.
'In the Summertime' made it all the way to number three on the US top 100 singles in 1970. Its easy-breezy lyrics and beat make it a summer favorite even today. Just listening to the song will bring back memories of long summer days spent out in the sun with loved ones. It is amazing how the power of music can take you back years in time.

The song was penned back in 1968 by the band's lead singer Dorset, while he was working for a watch company and music was merely a hobby. Little did the young man know what was in store.
"It's got no chorus; all it's got is a melody that goes over and over again with a set of lyrics that conjure up a celebration of life," he said. "Especially if you're a young person: it's a great day, you've managed to get a car - preferably with the top off - you're cruising around, and if you're a guy you're picking up girls."
Dorset said, as detailed here on Song Facts.
