If you routinely abuse your feet, you may not be surprised if they're swollen at the end of the day. Long hours standing on hard floors, uncomfortable shoes and plenty of walking can take a toll.

When you know why your feet are swollen, there's not much to worry about. Sit down and prop your tootsies in the air or give them a good soak. But what about when you can't find a reason?

Feet that spontaneously swell for no reason may be a sign of something more serious. Below are eight alarming medical conditions that cause swollen feet.

Reason #1 Lymphedema

Lymphedema happens when the fluid from your lymph nodes isn't able to drain properly. It causes swelling, discomfort and a feeling of tightness. According to the Lymphatic Education and Research Network, Lymphedema affects over ten million Americans.
