The traditional marriage vows ask a couple to promise to be together until death does them part. Today, 50% of marriages unfortunately end in a divorce, leaving you with inklings of doubt as to whether or not any marriage will really be able to go the distance these days. It can be a pretty big bummer for the generation that grew up with fairytale love stories of Disney princesses with a true love that defied all the odds to follow their heart.

We all know that it is far too simple for a marital union to break up early and we all also know the stereotype of the elderly couple that has been together for more than 50 years and are simply annoying each other at every turn. It can be a real downer.

This is why stories of love that truly lasts a lifetime are so inspiring to everyone.

True love seems like such a rare commodity these days that you can’t help but be overjoyed when you hear a fantastic story about a couple that has been married for decades and is still deeply in love with one another. Helen and Randy Sloup had their first date when she was 14 and he was 17, a tender young age ripe with potential for first love. The two went to a wedding dance together and Helen eventually told her son that she simply remembers that Rudy was a very attractive young man.

The two began their professional careers, with Rudy launching his career at Wahoo Oil and Helen worked in a bridal boutique. Throughout their early lives, both Rudy and Helen made time to focus on their passion for helping out in the community and improving the lives of others.

Helen worked in the community to improve the lives of those less fortunate wherever she could and Rudy focused on using his car-repair skills to keep the automobiles of older women in his community in tip-top shape.

Then, 63 years and six sons later, Helen became ill and passed away from heart disease. One of the couple’s sons, Bob, remembers that after his mom passed his dad simply couldn’t bring himself to go into their bedroom.

Rudy believes that even one day of his father not being with his beloved wife was too much for him. Bob dies just 36 hours after Helen, leaving the couple’s six sons and 21 grandkids to remember forever what true love looks like.
