Sweet Story Behind Kate Middleton's Recent Yellow Dress—And Reason Prince William Makes Fun Of Her

Kate Middleton and Prince William took time to show their support for Australia’s firefighters, police officers and paramedics via Zoom this Tuesday as part of the country’s first annual Thank A First Responder Day. During the meeting, Middleton wore a yellow dress—the same yellow dress Prince Wiliam teased her for wearing on a visit to Australia back in April 2014.

Since the coronavirus lockdown in March, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been keeping in touch with the public digitally through Zoom and social media. Just because the couple can’t be out and about, doesn’t mean that the 38-year-old Duchess has stopped wearing her signature elegant dresses.

Take last Tuesday for example. The vibrant yellow dress the mother-of-three wore during Tuesday’s Zoom meeting is the same one she wore while on a visit to New Zealand and Australia in 2014, Cosmopolitan reports. At the time, Prince William memorably teased Middleton about the dress. "William said I look like a banana," Middleton exclaimed back in 2014.

Reporters from various outlets have speculated whether Middleton deliberately recycled the striking yellow dress in order to pay subtle tribute to the Australians, making a reference to her 2014 visit. But it’s difficult to say whether the choice was deliberate since this isn’t the first time—or even the second time—the Duchess has donned the outfit. According to Cosmopolitan, Middleton wore the same banana-inspired fit in 2016 at Wimbledon. Suffice it to say that this is likely one of the Duchess’ favorite outfits.

The Daily Mail has identified the dress as the work of London-based Serbian designer, Roksanda Ilincic. At £900 (or roughly $1,140), it isn’t exactly affordable, though it does seem like the Duchess is getting her money's worth by wearing it on multiple occasions, including this Tuesday during Australia’s first Thank A First Responder Day.

Addressing Australian healthcare workers and first responders during the meeting, Prince William said:

“Earlier this year, we witnessed thousands of firefighters, supported by the wider first responder community, as they worked tirelessly risking their own lives to protect Australia's communities from the devastating wildfires.”

Middleton added:

“Day in, day out, paramedics, police, firefighters and support staff, work tirelessly to keep everybody safe, often risking not only their physical health but also their mental wellbeing."

The Daily Mail reports that after speaking with Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the couple was slated to visit Australia to see the devastation of the wildfires first-hand this year. In February, the Duke and Duchess were talking of visiting New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. However, the global pandemic may change the Duke and Duchess’ plans. If they do end up making the trip, it will be the couple’s first visit since 2014 and William’s fifth trip overall.
