Sweet Shelter Dog Breaks Out Of Kennel In Order To Comfort Puppies

A dog named Maggie was staying at a kennel in Alberta, Canada while her human family was on vacation. They knew she would be well taken care of, but her family probably didn't expect a security video of their dog to go viral back in 2016.

The staff at The Barkers Pet Motel and Grooming had closed for the night but continued to monitor the facility's surveillance cameras. They were surprised to see Maggie, an Australian shepherd mix, escape her kennel. She wasn't the first dog to escape her pen; it was what she did next that made this story newsworthy.

The Barkers Pet Motel fosters dogs for the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society. Maggie broke out of her pen to comfort two foster puppies that were spending the night at the kennel.

The staff thinks Maggie heard the puppies crying and escaped her pen to save them. Sandy Aldred, the owner of the kennel, was watching the surveillance cameras when she saw Maggie sitting in front of the puppies' cage, according to CBC.

Aldred rushed back to the dog motel to return Maggie to her pen. As soon as she walked in the door, Maggie rushed to her and tried to direct her to the puppies' kennel. She was excited and clearly wanted to play with the puppies. Sandy Aldred decided to introduce Maggie to the foster pups. Maggie licked and nuzzled the puppies the way a mother dog would.

After a few minutes, the three dogs curled up together and went to sleep. Maggie and the puppies were still cuddling together in the morning. Aldred believes Maggie needed the two puppies as much as they needed her.

Maggie was once a foster dog herself, according to Barkers Pet Motel and Grooming's Facebook post. She gave birth to a litter of her own while she was living at an animal shelter. Maggie and her puppies were all adopted out to different homes. Was Maggie missing her own puppies, or was she simply following her maternal instinct? What we do know is that Maggie did a wonderful thing for two terrified puppies.
