It's not very often that the entertainment community gets it right. One would not have to look very hard to find a number of fantastic and popular entertainers who were told they would never make it in their respective industries for one reason or another. Such was the case for Susan Lucci, this beautiful 72-year-old woman who fast became the focal point for one of the most amazing careers in television.

For anyone who who might have been living on another planet from 1970 to 2011, Lucci was the actress who played Erica Kane in the long-running daytime soap opera "All My Children."

Although her popularity was undeniable, Lucci initially never seemed to get the acclaim she had earned over so many years. For a long while, she had the dubious distinction of having been nominated for 18 straight Daytime Television Best Actress Emmy nominations without winning even once. Finally, she got her coveted award in 1999. In a recent interview on "Oprah - Where Are They Now?" visible here, Lucci told of her struggles to make it to the screen.

It seems the powers that be in the early part of her career thought there was an issue with her looks that would keep her from succeeding as an actress. Fortunately, Lucci's mother would encourage her daughter, pointing out the more exotic looking women if they ever watched beauty pageants together when she was growing up.

With a heritage that was half Swedish and half Italian, Lucci reported she was told success would not be hers "because I didn't have at least blue eyes." Her response back in the day was, "Oh yeah?" After years of watching her loving father suffer from the remnants of racism due to they way he looked, Lucci was determined to make it in spite of the fact she had "dark hair and dark eyes and olive skin." A career spanning five decades makes it clear that these people were wrong.
