Susan Boyle became an instant sensation throughout the world after she appeared on the third series of "Britain's Got Talent." Although that introduction aired over a decade ago, Boyle has managed a level of staying power rarely seen by other TV stars. That performance of the Les Miserables classic "I Dreamed a Dream" has been seen millions of times, including by Simon Cowell who was amazed. Her overnight fame was very much deserved, and today, she has achieved a singular position as one of the most celebrated singers of our time.

Today, Boyle is a household name of sorts across the world, with her first audition in 2009 being lauded as one of the best moments of TV by many viewers. Today, Boyle lives a comfortable life as a professional singer, with many of her records reaching top positions in charts and receiving a significant number of accolades for her music. She has also returned to the stage, taking part in "America's Got Talent: The Champions" in 2019.

Even though it seems like her life is a real-life fairytale, Boyle has had her share of difficulties and tragedies as well. It was not easy for her to be taken seriously, and people's snap judgments about her were clear from her first audition. Along with her diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome, she has also faced trouble with public officials and dealt with the deep grief of losing close family members. Though she has never been married, people continue to question her about her deeply shrouded personal and romantic life even today.

Boyle celebrated her 60th birthday on April 1, 2021. Most people are curious to know if Boyle, who likes to keep her personal life as private as possible, has a romantic history. Express UK reports that in an interview with Lady Magazine, Boyle said about this subject, "If I had a man friend it would be purely platonic — I've been on my own too long now to get married." However, Boyle did speak of her romantic life in more detail in the 2020 interview, saying that she hadn't been on a date in six years. When probed further about this in an interview with OK!, she said, "You mean go with fellas? No, youngsters may be able to do it, but I haven't got the time... It is still nice to be asked, though. I had a date in America six years ago, which lasted exactly 45 minutes."

She had spoken about the same subject in the previous interview. "I did have a gentleman friend, a doctor. We went for lunch, but I didn't tell anyone," she continued about the mystery man. "I went for a massage in the spa of a hotel and met a doctor, and then we went out for lunch. I didn't tell anyone, and my team thought I'd been kidnapped."

This was because she had a show later on, and her team panicked wondering if Boyle would make it back in time. However, despite the nice date, Boyle said, "The guy was nice, but he wasn't for me." Particularly, she found keeping constant contact difficult. "I couldn't be dealing with keeping up with the correspondence," she elaborated.

Though she is not married or currently in a relationship, Boyle has expressed an interest in having children in the future. In 2019, she spoke to The Sun and said, "When things quieten down a bit I would like to get into fostering. I'm 58, so I've got something to bring my family home to. I've a lovely house, why not share it?" This is certainly a beautiful sentiment. She also said that she regretted not having children, "I've never had any of my own, that's my biggest regret, but I love kids. They're good fun to be with."

As a child, Boyle shared a very close relationship with her mother, whose death left a deep impact on her. In fact, it is because of her mother that she decided to audition for "Britain's Got Talent" in 2009. "I promised mum, just before she died, that I'd pursue my singing," she told Best magazine, as per The Sun. In 2015, Boyle lost her sister Brigid "Bridie" McCaw, whose loss also affected her deeply.

"It was very hard. Bridie was such a beautiful person, and very supportive of me," Boyle said in 2016. "She was a great loss to me and the family." Boyle had described her sister as her "rock" previously, so the death devastated her. The Sun also reports that Boyle has a fraught relationship with other members of her family, particularly her brothers. While things weren't always smooth for Boyle even after her meteoric rise to fame, 2016 was a year of added difficulties for the singer.

There were two instances of Boyle having a difficult time at airports, including one public breakdown at the Heathrow Airport in London and another one in Derry Airport in Northern Ireland. The first one was reportedly following a spat with her brother John, who attempted to send her back home to Scotland by dropping her off at Derry Airport. This emotional falling out led Boyle to publicly despair, and The Sun reports that passengers told the news outlet that Boyle was "screaming for help, unable to cope with finding her own way back to her Scottish home without assistance."

A similar incident occurred in the same month when Boyle had a public feud and breakdown at Heathrow Airport in London. Though it is not clear what caused this event, passengers reported that Boyle seemed extremely distressed at the time, as per Huffington Post UK. London Police released a statement saying that they responded to calls of a distressed woman at the airport, who was then taken to the hospital in an ambulance. CNN reported that Boyle was "fine" following the incident and made her way home, and added that no charges were filed.

Speaking about it later, Boyle said that her Asperger's syndrome contributed to her meltdown. "I was very frightened – it was badly handled," she told the Scottish Sun. The loss of her sister was also hard on her. "After she passed, I felt I had to take a step back, to find where I was going. I needed to take stock," Boyle said. Today, Boyle looks like she is in a better place mentally, and has since concentrated on her music and privacy. Dealing with loss is not easy, but we are glad that she is doing better now.
