We all have friends that we choose to spend time with, but everyone finds themselves questioning whether the people they surround themselves with are good for their mental health. It can be hard to find good friends, but what exactly are the attributes that you would use to characterize someone into this category? If you know anyone with the following seven traits, they’re definitely a friend that you should keep around for the long run.

1. They’re always by your side.

A good friend will be with you through good times and bad times. Although some friendships may fall apart due to trivial circumstances, a real friend will never leave your side no matter what. They are someone that you can count on for everything, and you know that they’ll be with you through any challenges that life brings you.

True friends never try to change the way you think or act. They accept you for who you are, no matter what. They always offer their opinions about what is going on in your life, but they’ll never try to sway your decision making either way. Anyone who accepts you as you are is someone that you should cherish.

3. They celebrate your accomplishments

When something great happens in your life, your true friends will be there to celebrate your big days. They never become jealous of your accomplishments, and instead, they encourage and inspire you to do even bigger and better things. Resentment in friendships is always a bad sign, but a true friend will be there to cheer you on when things are going well for you.

4. They give you energy.

True friends are those that can build up your energy levels and reinvigorate you in your times of need. They aren’t the people that drain all of your energy from a simple conversation, but rather are the people that fill you up with their wisdom and optimism. When you hang out with this person, you feel rejuvenated.

5. They always make sure to make time for you.

This is one of the most important parts of a friendship. Instead of always having to track this person down or triple text them to get a response, they always reach out to you when it’s time to get together. Even though both of you are busy, they always make time to catch up and learn about what has been going on in your life.

6. They don’t gossip

If your friend is constantly gossiping about people they know, you can be sure they’re talking the same trash about you. A true friend is someone that never goes behind your back to speak about you. They don’t indulge in idle gossip, and they never spread rumors. Any feelings that they have towards you are said to your face, and you never have to wonder if they’re being truthful or spiteful.

7. They aren’t possessive over you

Because they understand that everyone has their own busy life, they never become possessive or act entitled to your time. They let you do your own thing, understanding that you have other relationships that you need to tend to. A friend who knows how to give you your space while still being heavily involved in your life is someone you should keep around.
