One evening, an Ohio mother's 9-year-old daughter came home from school completely inconsolable.

Ashley Coughenour's daughter, Ella, had just started third grade a few weeks earlier at the Sterling Morton Elementary School. As the students filed into class, they had all been excited to show their home room teacher a new Elf on the Shelf toy. Unfortunately, that day a substitute teacher showed up rather than the regular instructor, reports Fox 8 News.

When the substitute teacher popped into the room, she immediately stated some rather harsh truths to the group of eight and nine year olds: Santa and his elves aren't real.

The moment Ella arrived home that evening, she dissolved into tears. She said, "Santa Claus isn't real. Christmas isn't real, and Christmas elves aren't real - they're all made up." Ashley was, at first, understandably confused before she received the entire story from her daughter. As Ella explained, the mother became completely enraged and immediately called the school to inquire about the incident that morning.

According to Mamamia, when the principal of the school found out, she made sure to call the parents of the entire class to personally apologize for the appalling incident. After all, it was extremely rude and unfounded for the teacher to drop this bombshell on these young students. As you can probably guess, this substitute teacher is no longer able to work for the Sterling Morton Elementary school.

When the teacher's husband was asked to comment on the situation, he stated that the students "likely misinterpreted" her statements.

Do you think it was alright for the teacher to break the news to these students? If you were a parent, what do you think would be the best way to respond to this situation?
