Stray Mother Dogs Found Raising Their Puppies Together—And Rescuers Are Blown Away By Their Bond

In today's modern world, there are many types of "non-traditional" families, from single parents to same-sex-couples to families with adopted kids, step-parents or step-siblings. With this in mind, it's not difficult to stretch one's imagination to the animal kingdom to find that there are also "non-traditional" families among our four-legged friends.

One particular situation found two stray mother dogs helping each other out, huddling together to stay warm and actually nursing and watching over each other's litters of puppies! A woman in Los Angeles was shocked to find these two dogs and their seven puppies in a downtown alley.

She saw that it was an unbearable and heartbreaking situation, so she rescued the two mothers and all of their puppies. Of course, finding them and bringing them home was one thing, but keeping them long term was another. So, the generous woman started making phone calls to see if she could find an animal rescue operation to help out.

One group that responded was the Northwest Dog Project (NDP) in Oregon. They saw this unique situation and immediately volunteered to take all nine members of this intertwined family!

Cleverly naming the two mother dogs Thelma and Louse, the staff at NPD found they couldn't tell which puppies belonged to which adult as both mothers were nursing all the puppies, regardless of which ones actually belonged to each individual mother.

“They seem to have a routine mapped out — one mom grooms the puppies while the other nurses them, and then they’ll switch. We can’t tell which puppies belong to who! It’s the first time I’ve ever seen something like this.”

Upon arriving at NDP, both dogs were a bit wary of the strange people surrounding them. Both were malnourished as well so, with a little kindness and food and loving attention, the dogs warmed up to their new caretakers soon enough.

And, of course, who can resist a cute puppy? Staff at NDP say that is has been great to spend time with the mothers and all the playful pups.

At this time, the puppies are still too young to consider trying to adopt out. Once they've reached about eight weeks, the establishment will start looking for new homes for these lovable furry creatures.

It seems that several people in the area have expressed interest in this amazing story and are interested in adoption. Some have even said they would like to adopt both mothers so these best friends can stay together.

How sweet is that?
