Strangers Assume Disabled Man's Girlfriend Is His Nurse While They Contradict Expectations About Love

Although we all face difficulties and challenges, some are a little more apparent than others.

For one man, Shane Burcaw, his challenges have been around since he was two years old.

Now 26, he’s been in a wheelchair for the past 24 years of his life.

 Because he was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, he must use the wheelchair to get around because the neuromuscular condition is progressive and doesn’t allow him to walk or move his limbs in the same way that other people can.

Shane has never known what it’s like to walk on his own, and because of this, he has never gotten the chance to create any kind of muscles. Because of the condition, his body never developed the way it should have, bringing Shane some worries about how this would impact other aspects of his life, such as dating.

Shane was anxious that the limitations that are placed upon him physically wouldn’t allow for him to find a lifelong companion. He believed that others might simply date him out of pity, or that no one would be able to put up with the challenges that he faces. Shane had seemed to give up on the thought of romance and true love. But before he was ready to quit fighting for love, something amazing happened.

Hannah Aylward, a 23-year-old who was a student in college, stumbled upon a YouTube video that would change her life. The video she found? An interview featuring Shane himself, answering pressing questions about the challenges that he faces due to his disability.

Even though Hannah is an able-bodied human, she was fascinated with Shane. Although she faces no physical challenges or health issues like him, she found inspiration in his story and was drawn to him because of his sense of humor and witty personality. This was when Hannah decided to email Shane, leading to an online relationship between the two of them that was often flirty.

Not only were they finding things in common that made them realize they were meant for each other, but they also realized that their romantic and physical connections were strong. The couple did a long-distance relationship for two years before moving in together, and they’re still going strong! Although they face some challenges from outsiders who wonder how they could be together, they never let it bother them.
