Stranger Scoops Up Woman on the Slopes After She Loses Her Snowboard, Sparking A Viral Romance Story

What started as an ordinary day on the slopes turned into a moment JJ Wells never expected and one she will likely never forget. The 25-year-old waitress and content creator was snowboarding in Brighton Park in Salt Lake City, Utah, when she paused briefly to help a skier who asked her to film a trick. To keep her hands free, Wells stuck her snowboard into the snow. When she turned back around, it was gone. Already, it was sliding away down the mountain.
“I immediately panicked,” Wells tells PEOPLE exclusively. “Even though it wasn’t busy, I was stressed it was going to hit someone.” She ran after it on foot, watching it disappear farther and farther downhill. In that moment, Wells assumed the day was about to turn into hours of searching through snow, hoping someone had stopped the board before it caused an accident. Then a stranger appeared.
“He told me he saw my board slide away and asked if he could help me find it,” she recalls. “I didn’t realize that meant literally picking me up and carrying me while skiing.” The man, later identified as Ami Richter, seemed completely unfazed by the situation.
Wells says she could tell he was confident and capable, even as she processed what he was suggesting. She agreed to let him help, sensing the moment already felt unreal enough to become a story she would laugh about later. As Richter lifted her and skied down the mountain,
Wells did what comes naturally to her. She pulled out her phone and started filming. “I didn’t even think about it,” she says. “Filming it didn’t take away from the moment at all. It’s actually really cool that we get to look back and watch it instead of it just being a memory.” The rescue worked. The board was found. But what Wells did not realize yet was that this spontaneous act of kindness was about to take on a life of its own, far beyond the slopes.
After the adrenaline wore off and Wells replayed the footage, she realized the moment was too good to keep to herself. She posted the video to TikTok with a caption that summed it up:
“My board slid away so this random guy just swooped me up and skied me down the mountain.”
The clip quickly took off, racking up more than two million views and thousands of comments. Viewers immediately leaned into the romantic potential of the moment. One person wrote:
“Did we just witness the beginning of a rom-com?”
Another declared, “The fact that he is skiing and carrying you, ma’am, that’s your husband!!!” Someone else added:
“Waiting for this to become a movie.”
As the video spread, many wondered whether the story ended on the mountain or continued off camera. Wells now has the answer. “Yes, we’ve stayed in touch and we actually started a romantic relationship,” she says. “He saw the video right after I took it, and he’s since posted it on his TikTok too.” What resonates most with Wells is not just how the moment went viral, but how unexpectedly it changed her life.
She sees the experience as a reminder that connection does not always come from carefully curated profiles or endless swiping. She tells PEOPLE: “Get out of the house and off the dating apps,” then adds, “You might meet the love of your life in the wild or on top of an actual mountain.” For those who have been following along and rooting for the pair, Wells is happy to keep sharing what comes next. She says, “I’m excited to keep sharing our journey,” then adds, “This is only the beginning.”
