Stranger Saves Woman On The Subway And Her Thank-You-Note Has Gone Viral

Street harassment can happen at any time, anywhere. When you are a woman commuting or taking public transportation, that is usually at the top of your mind. That’s especially true on a subway train because of the proximity to so many strangers.

One story about the New York City subway recently went viral after a woman shared her story on Reddit. User “strawberry_luv” posted in the “Two X Chromosomes” channel which is “intended for women's perspectives,” to congratulate a guy who got her out of a street harassment jam.

At first, you start reading it expecting a terrible ending. As the story builds and builds you get more anxious but finally have some relief.

Below are some excerpts of her story:

“I got on the 1 train here, and a man got on after me. (this happens everywhere) I had my keys between my hands but barely noticable because this guy has been standing behind me the whole 6 minutes i waited for the train. (calling me baby etc,) I sat down and he sat over me holding the bar and I felt so anxious like throwing up so I stood up near a bunch of other people holding the rail.

Then this guy says to me ‘hey Lauren. you going to Jeff’s dinner party too?’ i was confused for a sec because he was staring at me and my name isn’t Lauren. it took me like 10 seconds to even realize what he was doing.

i said yeah. and he said ‘perfect timing we can walk together. what stop were you going to get off on” and I told him. then he says look what Jeff texted me and handed me the notes app which had ‘are you ok?’ and he kind of moved to side so i could write in it. I told him this guy was following me.”

Later on in the post, you find out that the guardian angel’s name was Michael and he walked her all the way to her destination. The guy who was initially following her then left them alone. The story ended well. We think that we are prepared for such situations, but just like the original poster said, sometimes you can freeze and shut down.

To express her gratefulness, she said:

“I am so thankful men like him are out there and aware of situations like that. In New York most people really keep to themselves so thank you very much Michael wherever you are. I am sorry I made you late but you were like my guardian angel.”

We hope that the Michael in the story eventually read this thank-you note and got the recognition he deserves. It’s difficult for women in sticky situations and sometimes it’s up to men or other women to be good samaritans and help out.
