A small act of kindness can go a long way. This is something that one man found out after having a brief conversation with a waitress at a breakfast diner in Stockbridge, Georgia. Eusebio Phelps is a pastor at New Faith Christian Church who made a new friend in 2020 when he picked up his food from a Waffle House.

The waitress who took his order over the phone was named Hannah Hill, and Phelps was blown away by how incredibly kind she had been. Wanting to pay that kindness forward, he gave the waitress the rest of the money in his wallet, which was about $40, and told her to keep the change.

Afterward, Phelps learned that Hill was more than eight months pregnant, so he wanted to do something to help her with her baby. Phelps had lost his son named Samuel about seven years ago, so he wanted to do all he could to make sure that Hill and her baby were well cared for. It turned out that the two had more in common than they previously thought, as Hill revealed that the name of her unborn child was Samuel.

At that moment, Phelps knew that he needed to do something to help Hill and her soon-to-be-born baby. He quickly got to work connecting with others in the community and made a post on social media asking people if they could donate. The goal was to raise $1,000. After less than a day, Phelps had raised a life-changing amount of money to give to the waitress. Read on to find out more about this heartwarming story.

Phelps met Hill when she was more than eight months pregnant with her second child while waitressing at a breakfast diner, according to 11Alive. After learning that she was planning on naming her son Samuel, he knew it was a sign that he needed to do something to help her out as much as possible. “Well we lost our son Samuel seven years ago in Atlanta,” Phelps said. “It’s coming up on the anniversary.” At that moment, he decided that he wanted to raise $1,000 to give to Hill.

The pastor made a Facebook post sharing Hill’s story and asked the community to donate if they could. The next morning, he saw that he already surpassed his $1,000 goal, but the donations kept pouring in. Phelps planned to surprise the waitress with the money at her place of work that night, but she wasn’t there. At that point, the donations had totaled to about $6,500, as per 11Alive.

Fortunately, Phelps and Hill were able to finally reconnect. By that point, the donations had amounted to more than $12,000, and everyone threw Hill a surprise baby shower at Waffle House to celebrate.

According to 11Alive, Hill called the money “life-changing,” as she had been staying with her mom while trying to make ends meet. The waitress said she plans on using the money to help her buy a car and get a place with the child’s father and their roommate. The New Faith Christian Church is also going to help her with child care for the next year.
