A dolphin that was stranded on the shore of Cockelshell Road in Tralee, Ireland was rescued by Gardaí last Thursday.

The struggling dolphin was reportedly spotted by a passerby, who then alerted the Irish police, locally known as the Gardaí.

A source told the Irish Mirror:

"The dolphin had stranded on the beach at low tide and was spotted by a person walking in the area. There was no one else to call so the guards were phoned and they came out and set about saving the life of the animal.”

The publication reported that the policemen retrieved wet towels to cover the dolphin as it struggled. They then called the Tralee Fire Brigade to help get the mammal back into the ocean.

The Tralee area is famed as being home to a dolphin named “Fungi”, although authorities have stated that they did not believe this to be him.  Fungi is a dolphin famous for swimming in the waters around the Tralee area. According to radiokerry, he is believed to be one of the oldest solitary dolphins in the world.
