Stranded Dog Discovered Swimming 130 Miles From Shore Gets Rescued By Oil Rig Workers

Workers aboard an oil rig 135 miles from Thailand's coast were shocked to see a dog swimming in the Gulf. They had no idea how the pup had ended up in the ocean, but they knew they had to act fast to save its life.

A trio of workers spotted the dog, a brown Aspin, struggling to keep its head above water. They held a pole out for the dog to climb up, but he was too weak.

The exhausted dog looked up at them with sad eyes pleading for help.

A quick-thinking crew member then used a rope to hoist the pup aboard.

The dog was shaking, and he was too weak to stand. The crew named him Boonrod, a Thai word that means survivor. They bathed Boonrod, gave him fresh water and encouraged him to drink an electrolyte solution.

Boonrod spent two nights recovering on the rig. As much as the crew wanted him to stay, they knew he was in need of medical attention. They used a crane to transfer him to an oil vessel. The oil vessel took Boonrod to a veterinarian in Songkhla, Thailand.

For Vitisak Payalaw, a Chevron offshore planner, it was a miracle they saw the dog in the first place. If the waves had been any higher that day, Boonrod would have been swept away unnoticed.

Payalaw believes Boonrod fell off of a fishing boat. If nobody claims the dog, he'd like to adopt him.

Boonrod is currently being cared for by the Watchdog Thailand animal charity. He's doing great and is expected to make a full recovery.
