Store Can't Send Elephant Table To Man's Grieving Wife, So Strangers Plan A Secret Road Trip To Transport It To Him

We all have those weird knickknacks and trinkets in our homes that might seem ugly or strange to others, but that remind us of someone special or of a time in our lives when we were truly happy. For as gaudy or unsightly as these objects might be, they're deeply meaningful to us.

People who gravitate to items like this can find a home on the Facebook group "Weird Secondhand Finds That Just Need To Be Shared." The group is devoted to those oddball items found in thrift and secondhand stores that might be special to a select few, but just seem strange and dorky to everyone else.

One day, a user posted an image of a seemingly tacky glass coffee table that featured a ceramic elephant as its base. The elephant's trunk poked through the glass surface, rendering the table something that many would consider to be a total eyesore.

However, one user didn't think the table was an eyesore. He shared with the group that the table reminded him of his late son, Brayden, who'd died of cancer at the tender age of 13. The man went on to explain that just before Brayden succumbed to his illness, he presented his mother with a photograph of a mother elephant tenderly protecting her baby. He said that for whatever reason, the so-called "weird" coffee table reminded him of that photo and that cherished memory.

Sara Hutchinson and Julie Thomas didn't know one another, but they'd occasionally exchanged jokes and comments on the Facebook group.

After the man shared his story, the two strangers began talking to one another. The women might not have known each other, but they were both committed to finding a way to get the elephant table to this grieving father.

The thrift store that the elephant table called home was refusing to sell the item over the phone or to ship it across state lines. So Sara decided to go pick it up in person in Minnesota.

According to FOX 17 News, she then drove for hours to meet Julie at a rendezvous point, where Julie took possession of the elephant table and proceeded to drive it to the next pickup point, where yet another kind stranger took possession of it and continued on the journey to the man's home in Michigan.

As the elephant table made its journey across multiple states, hundreds of people watched the saga unfold on social media. Finally, the elephant table arrived at the grieving father's house, where it brought comfort and hope to him and his family.
