Steve Carell Spills On How He Met His 'Beautiful, Intelligent And Really Funny' Wife Nancy

Emmy-winning actor Steve Carell and his wife, Nancy Carell, have been married for nearly three decades and got together because of their mutual love for comedy.

Steve and Nancy met in the 1990s at The Second City comedy club in Chicago, where they both took part in improv classes. Steve was the teacher and the club's main performer while Nancy was one of the students who also worked as the bartender across the street.

The attraction Steve had for Nancy was immediate and he intimated to The Guardian in a 2013 interview that the woman ticked all the boxes. The smitten teacher described her as "beautiful, intelligent and really funny" but thought she was not interested because she hardly spoke to him.

Steve and Nancy didn't date right away but both could sense that there was some flirting going on between them. According to the experts, people who share laughter together send out signals that arouse their connection and this similar love for humor and comedy could be an integral part of a relationship. However, it took Steve some time to muster the guts to ask Nancy out on a date because he was admittedly a nervous guy.

The actor recalled, in an interview with "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in 2015, that people at the bar were egging them on to go out. When he finally asked Nancy, Steve admitted he felt like a kid in the eighth grade, when he got his first rejection from a girl on the phone.

Steve found out later that Nancy was quiet around him at his improv class because she was also nervous. Fortunately, they were able to overcome this phase and got married in 1995.

After the wedding, the Carells ended up working the same jobs as correspondents on "The Daily Show.” They also welcomed their first child, a daughter named Elizabeth, in 2001. A few years later, in 2004, Nancy gave birth to their son, John, and Steve was on his way to clinching the iconic role of Michael Scott on the award-winning TV series "The Office."

Because of their naturally beautiful chemistry, Nancy was also cast as Carol, her husband's character's love interest in the popular show. "The Office" producer Greg Daniels had planned Nancy's guest appearance even before the series started airing in 2005.

Nancy appeared in the second season and told Decider that the experience on the show was both fun and nerve-racking. In her mind, she didn't want to screw up her husband's series, as "The Office" was already established as one of TV's best comedies.

And while Michael and Carol's TV relationship didn't last, Steve and Nancy's relationship in real life has been one of Hollywood's most admirable marriages. Yet Steve doesn't believe there is a secret to his relationship with Nancy.

"People say what's the secret to a marriage? There's no secret – I think you get lucky," he told The Guardian.

He also explained that on their wedding day, he watched Nancy walk down the aisle and a sense of calm and strength washed over him. The feeling was empowering because he knew that he found the right person to be with for the rest of his life.

Steve told Parade in 2018 that a lot of people in his family have a sense of humor but he and Nancy are completely on the same wavelength so they always make each other laugh.

"We must have a thousand inside jokes, between the two of us, and it never gets old.”
