Stephen Baldwin Reveals The Real Truth Behind Why He Left Hollywood

Success in Hollywood often comes with one expectation: keep climbing. Bigger films, bigger paychecks and bigger fame are usually considered the natural next step. For Stephen Baldwin, however, the path that seemed obvious to everyone else never felt like the right one.

Following memorable performances in films including "The Usual Suspects" and "Bio-Dome," Baldwin appeared poised to become one of Hollywood's rising stars. Instead, he gradually stepped away from mainstream entertainment, a decision that puzzled many who watched his career unfold during the 1990s.

Looking back, Baldwin says the turning point wasn't driven by burnout or disappointment. It came after a deeply personal shift in his life and priorities.

In an interview with PEOPLE, the actor recalled that their housekeeper told him and his wife, Kennya Baldwin, they would one day become born-again Christians and eventually have a ministry of their own. Although he initially dismissed the prediction, his perspective began changing after attending several church events with his sister Beth, who had already embraced Christianity.

One gathering left an especially lasting impression. Baldwin watched a group of tattooed skateboarders perform tricks before stopping to share messages of faith with thousands of young people gathered around them.

Inspired by what he witnessed, he helped create "Livin It," a skateboarding video that blended extreme sports, punk-rock Christian music and an evangelical message. The project quickly found an audience, leading to thousands of copies being distributed within months and opening the door to an entirely different chapter of his life.

Rather than chasing bigger movie roles, Baldwin says he found himself drawn toward something he believed carried a greater purpose.

As interest in "Livin It" grew, Baldwin's priorities shifted even further. Churches across the United States began inviting the skateboarders featured in the project to host live events, prompting him to leave Hollywood behind and spend years traveling with the ministry team.

"We went to 125 churches over four years," he told PEOPLE, adding that "Jesus and the Holy Spirit fascinated me."

The experience ultimately reshaped both his career and the kinds of stories he wanted to tell. Over the years, Baldwin has starred in and produced numerous faith-based projects while continuing to explore conversations about entertainment through his podcast, "One Bad Movie," where actors revisit films they'd rather forget.

Despite leaving the traditional Hollywood path, Baldwin says he has never regretted the decision. Reflecting on his life today, he expressed gratitude for his family, his career and the direction his faith has taken him.

"I've made more money than I could have wildly imagined, and I'm married to the hottest chick I've ever seen in my life," he told PEOPLE. "Jesus is my rock. My wife is my anchor. I've had the most amazing life and I'm only 60."

It was only then that Baldwin explained why walking away from Hollywood never felt like giving something up.

"I didn't want to be Tom Cruise, and have to make $100 million at the box office," he told PEOPLE. "I'd rather be a schmuck from Massapequa, New York."

For Baldwin, success was never about becoming Hollywood's next leading man. It was about building a life that reflected the values he chose after stepping away from the spotlight.
