It's a heartbreaking fact that animals are still abused in our country each and every day. While police departments and animal welfare organizations do their best to stop these crimes, there is no possible way to prevent them from happening.

This past February, the Lee County Domestic Animal Services got a phone call that broke their hearts. The organization is located in Florida, and a resident was calling to let them know that they had found a dog in horrifying conditions.

The dog’s snout was taped shut with thick red electrical tape. Not only that, but the dog was also panting, drooling and had wounds located in various places on his body. Thankfully, the dog was retrieved and they were able to provide him with the medical treatments he needed to get better. While the police department tried to find the person responsible for leaving the dog in such awful condition, they fell in love with him. Deputy Richard Castellon actually ended up adopting the dog for himself and naming him Chance, after his second chance at life.

But not only does Chance get to live with the deputy. He also gets to work with his new owner! After his adoption, he was given the title of deputy and even got his own personalized badge of honor. Although he isn’t a K9 officer that chases crime, he gets to travel to community events and act as a spokesperson for one of the Sheriff programs called Pets on Patrol.

Now that Chance is happy and situated in his new home and spending lots of time being socialized around the community, his owner Deputy Castellon is focusing his efforts on finding and punishing people who choose to abuse or neglect their animals.

These crimes are of utmost importance to Castellon after he fell in love with Chance who had such a bad start at life at the hands of cruel humans.

Castellon believes that the fines for animal cruelty aren’t harsh enough punishment for the crime. He wants to implement a new system that would organize and track offenders that have repeat crimes on their record, in order to prevent more animal abuse from happening.

Although their offices are unable to save every single animal, if one thing is for certain, it’s that Chance got an amazing shot at life with his new owner. What do you think about this story? Have you ever witnessed animal abuse? What did you do to prevent or stop it?
