Speeding Drivers Slow Down When They See This Barrier, Then Notice Nothing's Blocking Them

Would you slow down if you saw this on the road, or are you not easily fooled by illusions? A small fishing town in Iceland called Ísafjörður developed a modern and artistically creative way to slow down speeding drivers without having to build anything on the road.

Icelandic environmental commissioner Ralf Tryalla commissioned the speed "bump" after seeing a similar project developed in New Delhi, India. Tryalla obtained all the necessary permits from the police and Transportation Authority to paint the crosswalk, which was done by street painting company Vegmálun GÍH.

Tryalla felt that the 18.6 mph speed limit was too high for the area, so he wanted a clever and attractive solution. Vegmálun GÍH’s manager Gautur Ívar Halldórsson worked with Tryalla on designing the crosswalk/speed bump by studying 3D painting, which resulted in not only a successful speed bump for cars, but a complete work of art in the city.

There are even plans to paint more around the town since they have proven successful in Ísafjörður and New Delhi, as well as Central Asia, Chengdu, China, Osaka, Japan, Vancouver and Germany.

Would you want something like this in your city or town?

Some countries have gotten creative with their crosswalk design by adding illusions of children playing in the street and Charles Schultz’s Peanuts crossing the walkway. It's absolutely amazing!

If you think this is something your area or neighborhood needs, show this video to your friends and family! Maybe you and your neighborhood can rally together to get one painted in your town :)
