The crowning of a homecoming queen is something notable for young girls to see. Many dream of getting that dazzling crown and having the entire school body celebrate their title. When you have a special needs child, you hope that she or he is accepted and treated with respect. A smaller school can be friendlier because everyone knows your name.

Take, for instance, the 200-student body in Wayne Community Schools in Iowa that goes from seventh through twelfth grades.

Chelsea Sloan is a fine example. She is now a senior at the school, but her mom was initially worried about her lovely daughter fitting in. Chelsea has Down syndrome but has never let her condition get in the way of a full life and an active school schedule. She is well-liked and popular and was named to the school's homecoming court. Talk about excitement, her mom, Angie, took to Facebook to express her joy.

Angie wrote that Chelsea was over the moon with the announcement and had been telling everyone that she had made the homecoming court. As a mother, Angie was beaming with pride because her daughter was enjoying normal school celebrations like any other classmate. That is the way every student should feel as a member of their student body.

Katie Gassman was crowned the homecoming queen that day, and Chelsea was thrilled to be part of the court and watching her classmate receive a beautiful, sparkling crown. The whole school was witnessing the event in the gymnasium, and then, something quite spectacular unfolded. Katie handed a note to the woman announcer to read to the entire body. It was tender and sweet; Angie Sloan began to cry.

The note said that Katie wished to share her crown with the girl who always kept a smile and had undergone a number of challenges.

Katie then removed her crown, walked over to Chelsea and placed it on her classmate's head.

Chelsea was stunned, and her mouth dropped open in disbelief. It was an unforgettable moment, and the touching video captures it all.

Angie expressed her feelings on social media, praising Wayne Community Schools for having a student body that shows love, kindness and compassion. She thanked Katie for always treating Chelsea like a worthy classmate.
